Building a stronger R community !!!!

It's been an incredible start to the year for R Users Malawi! We successfully held back to back knowledge sharing sessions in January and February, and the energy from our community has been nothing short of amazing.

We kicked off the year with , who led a deep dive into automating reports with R. In the world of Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E), where routine reports and presentations are the norm, automation isn't just a luxury it's a necessity. Dickson Stanford showcased how embracing automation reduces human error and frees us up to focus on insights rather than repetitive tasks. A massive thank you to Dickson for setting the bar high for 2026!!

This month, George Sichinga took the stage to break down Machine Learning into understandable bits. One analogy that stuck with us was his explanation of training vs. testing data:

" As a teacher, would you use the exact same examples you used in class for the final exam?"

The answer is a resounding No and that is the core of why we split data in Machine Learning. It was a brilliant "aha!" moment for everyone.

To Our Amazing Attendees:
Thank you for your participation and curiosity. The discussions were rich, and we hope you walked away with practical skills. We would love to hear from you in the comments!

What was your biggest takeaway from either the January or February session?

To Those Who Missed Us:
We will be sharing a link to the session materials in the comments below shortly. Stay tuned, and we hope to see you during the next one!

Finally, thanks to our organizers Prisca Njonjo Kamanga , and James Sangala 👏

Thats a wrap for January events.

We had an online event with our facilitor Stanford on a topic " Automating reports for research and motivating projects using R"

Which covered the following areas.

1. Understand the concept of automated Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) reporting.
2. Explain the structure of an R Markdown document (YAML, text, and code chunks).
3. Generate key monitoring indicators (means, pass rates, attendance).
4.Disaggregate indicators by key variables
5. ompare outcomes across evaluation rounds (baseline, midline, endline)
6. Run and interpret a basic regression model for outcome evaluation
7.Produce professional reports in Word, PDF, and HTML from one script
8.Understand how automation reduces reporting time and errors

Welcome to R Users Malawi

R Users Malawi is a community-driven network of R programming enthusiasts, data scientists, statisticians, researchers, students, and developers across Malawi, supported by the R Consortium. We provide a collaborative platform for learning, knowledge sharing, and innovation using R for data analysis, visualization, and research.

Our mission is to build an inclusive R community that strengthens data science and analytics capacity in Malawi through training, collaboration, and real-world data-driven projects.

We organize in-person and online sessions covering topics such as R and RStudio, data cleaning and visualization, statistical analysis, machine learning, GIS, and reproducible research. We also host guest speakers, promote peer-to-peer learning, and support students through mentorship and networking opportunities.
