UPDATE YOUR ANTI-VIRUS

Now that our computer system is updated, let's also consider updating the applications mainly the Anti-Virus.

Most computer owners disregard updating the Anti-Virus on their computers. When you install an Anti-Virus you have to frequently update it. The presence of Anti-Virus on the computer does not guarantee that protection from viruses until it is updated.

The Anti-Virus has to get new methods of detecting viruses. Every day there are maliscious people creating new Viruses with different aims. Some to disrupt businesses, some just for fun including those that want to steal your information. In short your Anti-Virus software is outdated the moment a new virus is created.

The Anti-Virus can be configured to automatically update itself or you can do it manually. An active internet connection is a must.

How to check and update your Anti-Virus.

We will discuss three Anti-Virus softwares out of the many Anti-Virus softwares on the market.

Windows Defender

A Windows operated computer comes with an Anti-Virus pre-installed. You can check for updates by doing the following:

1. Click start and type Windows Defender Security Center. Click to open it.

2. Click on the Virus & threat protection tile

3. Click on Virus & threat protection updates.

4. Click on Check for Updates

Kaspersky

Kaspersky Anti-Virus also requires an active internet connection to download and install Updates. You must have it licensed in order to download and install updates.

1. Click start and type Kaspersky. Click on the Kaspersky Anti-Virus version installed. ie. Kaspersky Internet Security.

2. Click Database Update.

AVG

AVG has two types of licensing models. One is Free and the other you have to purchase. Like any other Anti-Virus, AVG requires an active internet connection.
To update do the following:

1. Click on start and type AVG. Select AVG to open the user/application interface.

2. Click the menu. Usually it's shown as three horizontal lines.

3. Click settings ensure General is selected.

4. Click Update.

PART TWO

Updating the Operating System.

The OS requires to be updated frequently. These updates are important to it's functionality and also security.

Windows OS

To update a Windows OS do the following:

Connect your computer to an active internet.

Click on the start menu
Type Update, in the list choose Check for Updates. Wait while Windows checks for updates.
Click install Updates.

When all updates are installed, might be asked to restart your computer. The update installation continues and might take a lot of time. During this phase, DO NOT unplug your computer of force shut down by pressing the power button.

Updating Mac OS

Connect your Computer to an active internet.

Choose System Preference from the Mac menu

Click on software update to check for updates.

If there are any updates click the Update now button to install the updates.

Updating Linux OS

Due to the many versions and variations of Linux OSs, this "how to" will touch on Ubuntu Linux. For other distributions of Linux we have a separate series of based on Linux.

Connect your computer to an active internet connection

An account with sudo privilege is a must.

Press CTRL+ALT+T together to open the terminal

Type sudo apt-get update press enter

Type sudo apt-get upgrade -y press enter

That's it you have your computer system updated. Regularly check you computer system for updates by following these steps.

UPDATE YOUR COMPUTER
PART ONE

Most computer owners overlook this very critical and important task. Today I want to discuss why it is important to keep your computer system updated at all times.

Let's start by dissecting the computer system.

The computer system is comprised of hardware and software. The hardware are the physical parts that we can see and touch. Components such as the keyboard, mouse, hard disk drive etc. Software on the other hand is the applications that are installed on the computer generally the reason we spend so much time on that computer. Applications such as Microsoft Office Word, Google Chrome, VLC etc. are all part of the softwares on the computer.

Getting down to the very core of the software, we have the Operating System, commonly referred to as the OS, and the Application Software. The OS provides a platform for all other applications to run on. Without the OS the computer is basically useless. We have operating systems such as Windows 10, Linux and Mac OS these are the most popular. The OS functions on top of the BIOS. Generally, most people get to use the computer without ever knowing this BIOS exists. BIOS stands for Basic Input Output System. It is responsible for loading the OS and controls how the OS interacts with the hardware on the computer.

What is the difference between the OS and Application Software?

Simply put the OS is the software that provides the user with an interface to interact with the hardware and application software. While the application software is the software that is used to perform a particular task. For example Microsoft office Word is used to create documents, Adobe Acrobat Reader is used to open PDF files while Windows 10 or any other OS, enable you to use the hardware such as the mouse and enables you to navigate the storage device and open installed applications.

That said, it is time to understand updates.

What are updated?

Updates are small pieces of software meant to fine tune the OS or the application software. These updates are developed by the software developers and are issued out via official channels for the product.

Once software is created, it is not the end of development. During it's life it is constantly tested and updated. These updates are bug fixers, upgrade to functionality and patches to vulnerabilities etc.

Which Software requires updating?

The operating system, the applications and though risky, the BIOS.

What about the hardware?

That's easy Just buy a compatible hardware and physically replace. Normally this is referred to as hardware upgrading.

Keep your passwords safe.

Continuing from the last article, today I will discuss how to keep your password from prying eyes.

Do not write down you password and stick on your desk or under the desk.

Do not click on save password for auto-complete on your computer or any public computers.

Do not share with or tell your password to anyone.

If you suspect anything funny with your password protected accounts, immediately change your password.

PASSWORD COMPLEXITY

Picking up from the last article on how to change passwords, today I discuss on how complex you password should be.

A good password should be hard to guess and not a word that can be found in the dictionary.

A good password should contain a minimum of 8 random alphanumeric characters.

A good password should contain both capital letters, and Small letters. It should contain numbers and symbols.

Example of a good password.

Examples of bad password.

Mary1980
africa2021

Changing computer passwords is usually something that most people ignore. This could be a risk to your data and information.
As part of preventative measures it is recommended that you change your passwords frequently. This could also be enforced by the organization/company IT policy.

I will walk you through on how to change your passwords. Note this "how to" will work on computers running Windows professional edition and not the home edition.
Check the windows edition on your computer.
1 - Click on the start menu and type Control Panel
2 - Press enter or click on the list item that says Control Panel
3 - In the top role click on the drop list on view by
4 - there are three to choose from Category, Large icons and Small icons.
5 - click on any of them except Category
6 - The view should change to list all elements of the Control Panel.
7 - Find and click on System
8 - under basic information your will find the Windows edition. eg Windows 10 pro

To change your password
1 - Click on start and type Control Panel
2 - Click enter or click on the list item that says Control Panel.
3 - Ensure your view is not set to category.
4 - Click on Administrative Tools
5 - Double click on Computer Management
6 - Click on Local Users and Groups
7 - A drop down list will appear. Click on Users. If you choose the right panel, double click on Users
8 - Right click on the account that you use and select Set Password.
9 - Click on proceed
10 - Type in the new password and retype it to confirm it.
11 - Press Ok
12 - That's it you have successfully changed your password.
