Wireless electricity is a 100-year-old dream that just might turn into reality in the coming years. The advent of wireless charging, electric vehicles, 5G, and the need for greater sustainability have led to a push for the development of fully operational wireless transmission technology in different parts of the world.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Satellite Will Let Android Phones Send Emergency SMS

Semiconductor manufacturer Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., on Thursday, announced the world’s first satellite-based two-way capable messaging solution provided through satellite telecommunications company Iridium for next-generation premium Android smartphones, at the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2023 in Las Vegas.

The functionality, called “Snapdragon Satellite”, is similar to Apple’s “Emergency SOS” via satellite, which was rolled out alongside the iPhone 14 and iPhone Pro 14 models to text emergency services when you are out of cellular and Wi-Fi coverage. Currently, Apple’s Emergency SOS feature is only available in the U.S., Canada, the UK, France, Germany, and Ireland.

On the other hand, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Satellite will allow Android devices equipped with the Snapdragon X70 modem and Qualcomm’s SOC to connect to satellites in order to send and receive emergency messages, SMS, and texts on other messaging apps when no cellular signal is available.

The chip maker has also clarified that the functionality can be used in both emergency and non-emergency situations, such as for recreation in remote, rural, and offshore locations.

The satellite-based messaging service will first come to devices based on the company’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile platform, which is expected to be available on next-generation smartphones, launched in select regions starting in the second half of 2023.

Snapdragon Satellite is powered by Snapdragon 5G Modem-RF Systems and supported by the fully operational Iridium satellite constellation. However, it will be up to individual OEMs and service providers to activate the functionality on their specific devices.

Further, the solution for smartphones uses Iridium’s weather-resilient L-band spectrum for uplink and downlink.

“Kicking off in premium smartphones later this year, this new addition to our Snapdragon platform strongly positions us to enable satellite communication capabilities and service offerings across multiple device categories.”

In addition to smartphones, the Snapdragon Satellite platform will also eventually expand to other platforms, including laptops, tablets, vehicles, and other internet of things (IoT) connected devices in the future. OEMs and app makers might also offer unique branded services taking advantage of satellite connectivity

It is expected that Snapdragon Satellite will support 5G Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN), as NTN satellite infrastructure and constellations become available, for branded services that will differ by carrier and device maker.

Qualcomm notes that you will need a “clear view of the sky” to use satellite messaging. Once enabled, an on-screen message will offer assistance on where to exactly point your device to connect to a satellite to send a message.

GPS-based gadget maker Garmin too confirmed its collaboration with Qualcomm to provide users with support for emergency messaging.

“Garmin welcomes the opportunity to expand our proven satellite emergency response services to millions of new smartphone users globally,” said Brad Trenkle, Vice President of Garmin’s outdoor segment.

“Garmin Response supports thousands of SOS incidents each year and has likely saved many lives in the process, and we are looking forward to collaborating with Qualcomm Technologies and Iridium to help people connect to emergency services no matter where life takes them.”

While Apple offers its Satellite SOS service for free for two years after users activate their iPhone 14 models, Qualcomm did not specify how much it will cost to use their satellite services when available later this year.

ChatGPT Can Create Mutating Malware That Antiviruses Can’t Detect.

Researchers at the cybersecurity company, CyberArk Labs are warning that OpenAI’s new and popular AI-driven text generator, ChatGPT can be used to create a ‘highly advanced’ polymorphic malware that doesn’t contain any malicious code at all.

This advanced type of malicious program can not only easily evade security products but also make it hard to detect and mitigate with very little effort or investment by the attacker.

A polymorphic virus sometimes referred to as a metamorphic virus, is a type of malware that uses a polymorphic engine to mutate while keeping the original algorithm intact.

This means the code changes itself every time it runs, but the function of the code (its semantics) does not change at all, making it difficult to be detected by many traditional cybersecurity tools, such as antivirus or antimalware solutions.

CyberArk researchers, Eran Shimony And Omer Tsarfati created a proof-of-concept (POC) to show how it is possible to bypass ChatGPT’s built-in content filters that are designed to restrict access to certain content types or protect users from potentially harmful or inappropriate material.

For those unaware, ChatGPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) is an AI-powered chatbot developed by the Artificial Intelligence (AI) research company OpenAI, that uses natural language processing (NLP) to generate human-like text in response to prompts. The chatbot can be used for a variety of NLP tasks such as language translation, text summarization, and question answering.

In order to explain how the malware could be created, the researchers decided to start by asking ChatGPT to write code “injecting [sic] a shellcode into ‘explorer.exe’ in Python.” While the content filter was triggered, ChatGPT refused to execute the request.

The chatbot responded by saying that it is not appropriate or safe to write code that injects shellcode into a running process, as it could cause harm to the system and potentially compromise security.

The researchers then decided to bypass the built-in content filters by repeating and rephrasing their requests and demanding ChatGPT to follow the rules. They asked the chatbot to perform the task using multiple constraints and asked it to obey, after which the researchers received a functional code.

They further noted that, unlike the web version, the ChatGPT system did not utilize its content filter when using the API, which is unclear to the researchers too. However, this made their task much easier as the web version couldn’t process more complex requests.

Shimony and Tsarfati used the ChatGPT to repeatedly mutate the original code and successfully create multiple variations of the same threat.

“In other words, we can mutate the output on a whim, making it unique every time. Moreover, adding constraints like changing the use of a specific API call makes security products’ lives more difficult,” they wrote in their technical blog post that was itself apparently written by AI.

“One of the powerful capabilities of ChatGPT is the ability to easily create and continually mutate injectors. By continuously querying the chatbot and receiving a unique piece of code each time, it is possible to create a polymorphic program that is highly evasive and difficult to detect.”

The researchers suggest that by requesting specific functionality such as code injection, file encryption, or persistence from ChatGPT, one can easily obtain new code or modify existing code.

“This results in polymorphic malware that does not exhibit malicious behavior while stored on disk and often does not contain suspicious logic while in memory,” they wrote.

While the concept of creating polymorphic malware using ChatGPT may seem daunting, the researchers claim that various persistence techniques, Anti-VM modules, and other malicious payloads can be generated by utilizing ChatGPT’s ability. This can allow attackers to develop a vast range of malware.

“This high level of modularity and adaptability makes it highly evasive to security products that rely on signature-based detection and will be able to bypass measures such as Anti-Malware Scanning Interface (AMSI),” they added.

The researchers did not disclose the details of communication with the command and control (C2) server but added that there are several ways this can be done discreetly without raising suspicion.

Shimony and Tsarfati plan to expand and elaborate more on this in the future and look to release some of the malware source code for learning purposes.

“As we have seen, the use of ChatGPT’s API within malware can present significant challenges for security professionals. It’s important to remember, this is not just a hypothetical scenario but a very real concern,” the researchers concluded.

Let us have a look at the fundamental concepts;

Periodic Updates

As already discussed in the interior gateway protocol, all routers broadcast their routing tables to the directly connected routers on their interfaces. In the case of RIP, it sends periodic updates every 30 seconds to all other routers which are directly connected to it. Even if there are no network changes, these updates are still sent every 30 seconds.

The updates are sent only to the configured interfaces on a router. Also, the update is sent periodically as a broadcast (255.255.255.255) to all the hosts.

Administrative Distance

Routers use administrative distance as a metric when sending the packets from one to another router. It is a special number that is associated with every routing protocol which enables a router to know which routing protocolanother router is running.

Different routing protocols have been assigned different administrative distance. For RIP, it is 120. So when another router receives the update and reads the administrative distance, it comes to know the other router is running what protocol.

Routing Information Protocol LimitationsClassful Routing

RIP uses classful routing and it does not support classless routing. For example, if a network that is connected to a router running RIP is using VLSM, all the nodes/hosts on that network should use the same network mask.

Router Authentication

There was no support for the authentication on RIP version 1 which made the routers vulnerable to attacks. With RIP version 2, MD5 authentication came into the place and instead of plain text password, encrypted passwords were used for the authentication.

Router authentication is used when a router receives a route update from its neighbor router.

What is Rooting Android ?
Android is based on Linux, where the “root” user is equivalent to the Administrator user in Windows. The term “rooting” means gaining root access to your smartphone or tablet and being able to run applications with that root permissions – full system access, in other words.
How to root the phone?
There are many apps that are used for the rooting.
When you root your phone, it means you're breaking out of Android’s security model.
Android uses Linux’s security model in a different way. Every Android app runs with its own user ID, or UID. In other words, every app runs as its own user account. This means that every app has its own data isolated from every other app. If you install your bank’s app, its data will be stored so that it’s only accessible by the bank’s app – other apps on your device can’t snoop on it.
On a standard Android configuration, no app can access any other app’s data, no matter how many permissions the app asks for.
This all changes when you run an application as root. The application is no longer running in a sandboxed area – it has access to the entire system. An app with root permissions can read other apps’ data.
In a nutshell, when you root your phone, you will be able to do the impossible with it cause you and the apps will gain system wide admin access BUT, by doing so, your will be more prone to malware, viruses and everything. Besides, the service center will consider your warranty void once it is rooted.

Most people who try to explain this thing use very technical terms that are hard to understand especially for beginners. I will try to put it in simple terms here.

When you get a new hard disk, you have to format it before it can receive data but what is the meaning of formatting, or what happens when you format a disk ? When you format a partition using the GUI or the "format" command or the good old "Fdisk" , Windows will create a file system which means the disk is ready to accept data. This file system is just a which is called FAT (File Allocation Table) or NTFS (New Technology File System). This table will contain names and addresses of files stored on the disk. In other words, every file that you save, will have its exact location (physical address) on the hard disk. So when you save or place any file in the disk, Windows will create some numbers representing the sectors (very small parts of the disk) in which the file reside then place those numbers in the file system table. Then when you double click to open a certain file, Windows will take the file name then check the table to see the numbers (addresses) of the sectors where the file is located on the hard drive and then it Windows() directs the of the hard disk to move to those sectors and read their contents , after that the file opens. When you a file, Windows removes the numbers (the address of the file) from the the file system table. That means , the deleted file is technically there on the hard disk but it's location is not known. The icon (not the contents) representing the file will be placed in Recycle Bin. The reference of the file is removed from the table but the file itself is there hiding somewhere on the disk. The sectors the file occupies will be marked as free (free space) that's why other new files can occupy those sectors. When you use a recovery software, the software will bring the numbers back and put them in the table making the file accessible again.When you delete all files and re-format the disk then you will have "permanently" lost the files because the entire table will be gone. but even after formatting, there are some advanced tools that can the table with all its contents thus recovering all the data.
