Multicultural teams are becoming more common in the workforce. At Komponent, we've embraced multiculturalism in our teams and have seen great results. Yet, while these teams offer numerous benefits, they also present unique challenges that must be addressed.
Markas Gedminas, Sr. Tech Lead at Komponent, recently shared his thoughts on multicultural teams with Verslo žinios. He believes that cultural differences between team members from Lithuania and Norway can be bridged through effective collaboration. Markas notes, "The more we work in mixed teams, the better results we achieve."
At Komponent, we've learned from each other to overcome challenges such as communication styles. In Lithuania, it's common to communicate ideas and questions directly without much elaboration. Yet, such an approach can be perceived as too direct by Norwegian colleagues, who prefer more nuanced communication. However, over time, our teams found a communication style that works for everyone, such as adopting the Norwegian practice of giving and receiving feedback, which helped us improve our processes.
When it comes to hiring, cultural and professional skills are equally important. "We ask candidates to provide us with 10 recommendations from current or former colleagues to ensure that we're hiring the right person for the job, regardless of their country of origin. Our management style remains consistent across teams in different countries, with each team having a leader responsible for their performance. We empower each team to operate autonomously as much as possible," says Markas.
We believe that embracing multiculturalism can bring significant benefits to any organization. While it requires effort and patience to overcome cultural differences, we've seen first-hand that it's a worthwhile investment that can help teams achieve greater success.
