Toughlex’s 11th birthday turned into a real Mexican fiesta! 🌵

From testing our courage on the rodeo bull 🤠 to learning some new moves in a dance class with Justas Girdvainis💃🕺- there was definitely no shortage of fun.
Add plenty of delicious food, music, laughter and great company, and you get a birthday to remember. 🌮🎶

Building custom smart home solutions no longer requires being an electronics expert.

That was one of the key insights from our latest Tech Lunch, where we explored ESPHome, Home Assistant, and how modern tools are changing the way people approach home automation.

What stood out most: creating custom hardware projects is becoming accessible to far more people than ever before.

With affordable ESP32 devices, platforms like ESPHome and Home Assistant, and AI helping along the way, it's now possible to go from an idea to a working prototype much faster than in the past. Tasks that once required expertise across electronics, networking, and embedded development can often be tackled step by step with the right tools and guidance.

The result isn't just smarter homes. It's a much faster path from an idea to a working solution.

💡The takeaway? The hardest part is no longer building the solution. It's deciding what to build next.

Yesterday, during our All Hands meeting, we celebrated our achievements while also discussing our plans and goals for the future. These regular meetings give us the opportunity to reflect, align, and stay focused on what’s next.

Continuing our Tech Lunch series, where we share ideas, tools, and technologies we find valuable. This time, we explored React2Shell and took a closer look at how React Server Components work.

What stood out most: modern frameworks hide a lot of complexity. That's part of what makes them powerful. But it also means that seemingly small implementation details can have unexpected consequences.

The discussion gave us a closer look at how React handles data and references behind the scenes, while also highlighting the importance of dependency management and keeping packages up to date.

Here's another takeaway from one of our recent Tech Lunch sessions. This time, we explored how Monorepos and Turborepo help teams stay aligned as systems grow.

What stood out most: as systems grow, keeping code consistent often becomes harder than writing it.

The more applications share components, business logic, and configurations, the easier it becomes for things to drift apart.

A monorepo helps solve this by keeping related applications and shared code in one place. Changes can be made across projects in a single commit, making collaboration simpler and reducing synchronization issues.

We also looked at Turborepo, which tackles one of the biggest challenges of larger repositories: build times. Through intelligent caching, it avoids repeating work that's already been done, helping teams move faster.

💡The takeaway? Scaling software isn't just about building more. It's about staying aligned as complexity grows.

Most people carry a powerful automation tool in their pocket and never use it. That was one of the key ideas from our latest Tech Lunch, where we explored iOS Shortcuts - a built-in iPhone tool that helps turn repetitive actions into simple automations.

What stood out most: iOS Shortcuts isn't really about shortcuts. It's about removing friction from everyday life.

Whether it's opening the right loyalty card when you arrive at a store, triggering smart home actions with a single tap, starting music when connecting to your car, or creating reminders that fit your habits, small automations can make a surprisingly big difference.

Many of these automations fill small gaps that no existing app solves perfectly.

Turns out throwing a disc accurately is harder than it looks. 🥏

This week, the Toughlex team gave disc golf a try. For most of us, it was a first-time experience, which made the friendly competition even more interesting. New skills, plenty of laughs, and a great opportunity to challenge each other outside the workplace.
