From the latest railway technology to a museum of vintage machinery: this autumn, our team in Lithuania traded one for the other and spent a day in Biržai 🚜

It was our autumn team trip, a full day out of the office to see a new place and spend some time together away from work. After the museum, the day moved on to Montebolas, a team game somewhere between golf and football played in the manor park, followed by a walk around Biržai castle, across the long pedestrian bridge over Lake Širvėna, and on to Astravas manor.

Most of our working days are tied to ERTMS and signalling projects running in several countries at once, with schedules, deadlines and documentation that rarely stop. A day like this, with none of that, is a good reminder of how much easier the work gets when you know the people you do it with.

At BELAM, the projects are demanding, and the team behind them is what keeps them moving.

BELAM started in 1995 with telecommunications projects in local markets. More than 30 years later, we are a team of 120+ people, including 100+ engineers and technical specialists, with 500+ completed projects across telecommunications, networks, IT and railway infrastructure.

Today most of that work happens across Europe. In Sweden, our team is modernising 111 X31 trains with ERTMS in Malmö. In Norway, our work on the Grong-Bodø line has grown from point machine migration into full ERTMS deployment. In Denmark, we have completed ERTMS onboard installation, and in Germany our team has worked on the Berlin-Hamburg line together with LEONHARD WEISS GmbH & Co. KG 🚆

What does it take to lead an international railway project and build a team you can truly rely on? Our Project Manager Sergejs Cistjakovs shares his experience in a new article published by Vakarų ekspresas, reflecting on his career, the challenges of working across borders, and the people behind successful projects 🌱

Since joining BELAM in 2023, Sergejs has progressed from Deputy Project Manager to leading our Malmö project in Sweden, where the team is working on the modernisation of 111 X31 trains with new ERTMS technology.

For Sergejs, successful project delivery is about more than technical expertise. It takes people who trust each other, communicate openly, take initiative, and work together to solve challenges. Across Europe, trains are being fitted with ERTMS, the European Rail Traffic Management System. It replaces the many national train control systems that developed country by country with one common standard, built on two parts: ETCS, which supervises train movement, and GSM-R, the railway's own radio network.

The Öresund trains between Malmö and Copenhagen show why this matters. They have to work with Sweden's ATC-2, Denmark's ZUB 123, and ERTMS Level 2 as it comes into use on both sides of the bridge. ERTMS is designed so that one system can cover cross-border routes like this.

Fitting a train with it takes much more than a new screen in the cab. The onboard equipment includes a central computer connected to the train's brakes, a driver display, an antenna under the train that reads balises placed between the rails, sensors that measure speed and distance, a recorder that logs messages and driver actions, and a radio link to the trackside. Together, they continuously check the train's speed against what it is allowed to do, and can brake automatically if needed 🚆

Lithuania and the wider Baltic region have built a solid base of engineering and technical talent, with a higher share of first-year students choosing engineering and technology studies than the EU average 🇪🇺

That expertise is in short supply just across the Baltic Sea. Norway's labour authority, NAV, surveyed more than 11,000 employers this year and found the country short of close to 17,000 skilled tradespeople, electricians among them, a gap that stands out even more for a country of Norway's size. Sweden's own statistics office reports a similar shortage among its electricians and technicians.

For skilled specialists from the Baltics ready to work internationally, that shortage means real, open doors. Their work is valued exactly where it's needed most, and BELAM's own projects across Norway, Sweden, and Germany are proof of it, run by teams built from Baltic engineers and electromechanics who chose to take that step.

Our Malmö project keeps growing, and we're looking for an Electromechanic to join the team 🇸🇪

The work takes place in a locomotive depot, a warm, enclosed space where our teams carry out installation and dismantling on passenger trains and locomotives, work with cable routes and cables, install and connect new equipment, and handle testing and defect resolution according to technical documentation and diagrams.

This role fits electricians, low-voltage installers, auto electricians, and electromechanics who enjoy hands-on technical work. Basic English, attention to detail, and a solid safety mindset matter more here than years of experience.

Across Europe, railway communication is being rebuilt from the ground up. GSM-R, the radio system that has carried safety-critical signals for years, is being replaced by a new standard called FRMCS.

The shift is already underway. Germany, Sweden, Spain, and the Netherlands have started testing the new infrastructure, and full migration is expected to be completed by the mid-2030s. It's one of the largest network-wide technology changes European rail has seen in years, touching operators and cross-border lines across the continent 📡

For companies working in railway signalling, this is not a distant deadline. It's a shift happening now, country by country, project by project. At BELAM, we see it as a reminder that infrastructure work is never finished. It keeps evolving alongside the technology running through it.
