✈️ Aviation Security වල X-BIS කියන්නේ මොකක්ද?

Airport එකේ passenger baggage එකක් machine එකක් හරහා යනවා අපි හැමෝම දැකලා තියෙනවා. 👀

✈️ ගුවන්තොටුපළේ ආරක්ෂක පරීක්ෂාව (Security Screening) සියලුදෙනා සඳහා අනිවාර්ය වන්නේ ඇයි?

ගුවන්තොටුපළේ restricted areas වෙත පිවිසීමට පෙර, ගුවන් මගීන් හෝ ගුවන්තොටුපළ සේවකයින් කිසිවෙකුටත් ආරක්ෂක පරීක්ෂාවකට (security screening) භාජනය නොවී ඇතුල් වීමට ඉඩ නොදෙන්නේ ඇයි කියා ඔබ කවදාහරි සිතා බලලා තිබේද?

මෙය සාමාන්‍ය ක්‍රියාවලියක් පමණක් නොව, ජීවිත, ගුවන් යානා සහ යටිතල පහසුකම් ආරක්ෂා කිරීම සඳහා අත්‍යවශ්‍ය ජාත්‍යන්තර ගුවන් ආරක්ෂක අවශ්‍යතාවයකි.

🔐 ආරක්ෂක පරීක්ෂාව අනිවාර්ය වීමට හේතුව

ජාතික ගුවන් නීති: ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ Civil Aviation Act No. 14 of 2010 සහ National Civil Aviation Security Programme (NCASP) මගින් නීතිමය බලය ලබා දේ

✈️ ගුවන් යානා හදිසි තත්ත්වයන් (Aircraft Emergencies) සහ ICAO සම්මත – ජනතාව දැනුවත් වීමේ වැදගත්කම

ගුවන් යානා හදිසි තත්ත්වයක් යනු ගුවන් යානයක්, එහි ගමන්කරුවන්, කාර්ය මණ්ඩලය හෝ භූමියේ සිටින පුද්ගලයින්ගේ ආරක්ෂාවට බරපතළ අවදානමක් ඇතිවන ඕනෑම තත්ත්වයක් වේ. මෙවැනි අවස්ථා ලෙස යන්ත්‍ර දෝෂ, ගුවන් යානය තුළ ගින්නක්, වෛද්‍ය හදිසි අවස්ථා, අයුතු මැදිහත්වීම් (hijacking), හෝ තාක්ෂණික පද්ධති දෝෂ ඇතුළත් වේ.

✈️🔐 WHAT DOES THIS COCKPIT DOOR SWITCH ACTUALLY DO?

You may have seen this switch inside the cockpit of a Boeing 737 and wondered:
“What does this switch do?” 🤔
The switch shown in the photograph is part of the flight crew compartment door access/security system. It is not simply an ordinary door lock — it forms part of the security measures designed to control access to the flight deck.

🔐 WHY IS THE COCKPIT DOOR SO IMPORTANT?

The flight deck is one of the most security-sensitive areas of an aircraft.
Modern passenger aircraft are designed so that access to the cockpit is controlled by a combination of:

🔹 A reinforced flight crew compartment door
🔹 Locking and access-control systems
🔹 Communication between cabin crew and pilots
🔹 Monitoring of the area outside the cockpit door
🔹 Procedures for authorized access
🔹 Protection against unauthorized intrusion

The exact switch design and operating positions can vary depending on the aircraft type, configuration and operator.
🌍 WHAT DOES ICAO REQUIRE?

This is where aviation security standards become important.

Under ICAO Annex 6, Part I, Chapter 13 – Security, aircraft equipped with a flight crew compartment door are required to have a door capable of being locked, together with a means for cabin crew to discreetly notify the flight crew about suspicious activity or security breaches.

For applicable passenger-carrying aeroplanes above the specified weight or passenger-capacity thresholds, ICAO requirements call for an approved flight crew compartment door designed to resist forcible intrusion by unauthorized persons. The door must also be capable of being locked and unlocked from either pilot's station.

ICAO also specifies that, for these aircraft, the cockpit door should remain closed and locked from the time the external doors are closed after boarding until an external door is opened for disembarkation, except when access or egress by authorized persons is necessary.

There is another important requirement:

👀 The pilots must have a means of monitoring the area outside the flight crew compartment door so they can identify people requesting entry and detect suspicious behaviour or a potential threat.

🚪 SO, WHAT DOES THE SWITCH DO?

In simple terms, the cockpit door control allows the flight crew to manage the security status of the flight deck door according to the aircraft's approved procedures.

It is important to understand that ICAO does not prescribe one particular switch design or label for every aircraft.
The aircraft manufacturer and operator determine the actual cockpit door control system and operating procedures within the applicable regulatory and certification framework.
So, the switch you see in this photograph should not be interpreted simply as an “open door” button.
It is part of a much larger flight deck access-control and security system.
🛡️ WHY THIS MATTERS
Cockpit security is not just about keeping a door locked.
It is about creating multiple layers of protection:
IDENTIFY → COMMUNICATE → VERIFY → CONTROL ACCESS → PROTECT THE FLIGHT DECK
This layered approach helps ensure that only authorized persons can gain access to the flight crew compartment while the aircraft is operating.
ICAO's security framework also requires States and operators to establish measures and procedures to prevent unauthorized persons from entering the flight crew compartment during flight.

🚨 ගුවන් තොටුපළ හදිසි ආපදා පෙරහුරුව සහ ජාත්‍යන්තර ප්‍රමිතීන් තහවුරු කිරීම! (Full-Scale Airport Emergency Exercise) 🚨

අද දින ගුවන් තොටුපළේදී සිවිල් ගුවන් සේවා අධිකාරියේ (CAA) පූර්ණ නිරීක්ෂණය යටතේ දැවැන්ත හදිසි ආපදා පෙරහුරුවක් (Emergency Exercise) ඉතා සාර්ථකව පවත්වනු ලැබුවා.

මෙවර පෙරහුරුව සඳහා යොදා ගත්තේ ඉතාමත් ත්‍රාසජනක මෙන්ම තාත්වික සිදුවීමක් (Scenario):

✈️ VCBI සිට VRMM දක්වා පියාසර කිරීමට නියමිතව තිබූ "රාවණා එයාර්" (Ravan Air - RVN1010) යානය පිටත්වීමේදී (Initial climb) පැලිකන් පක්ෂි රංචුවක ගැටීමෙන් එහි පළමු එන්ජිමට දැඩි හානි සිදුවී ගිනි ගැනීමක් හටගන්නවා. ඉන්ධන කාන්දුවක් ද සහිතව වහාම යළි ගොඩබෑමට (MAYDAY) උත්සාහ කිරීමේදී යානයේ ස්ථායීතාව ගිලිහී ගොස් 04 ධාවන පථය (RWY 04) ආසන්නයේ කඩා වැටීමකට ලක්වීම තමයි මෙහි තේමාව වුණේ.
මෙම දැවැන්ත මෙහෙයුම සාර්ථක කරගැනීම සඳහා ගුවන් තොටුපළ කළමනාකාරීත්වය (Management), ගුවන් සේවා ආරක්ෂක අංශය (Aviation Security), ගිනි නිවන සහ මුදාගැනීමේ අංශය (Fire & Rescue), ගුවන් සේවා සමාගම් (Airlines) මෙන්ම ගුවන් තොටුපළේ සියලුම කාර්ය මණ්ඩලය එකම කණ්ඩායමක් ලෙස මහත් කැපවීමෙන් යුතුව කටයුතු කළා.

බොහෝ දෙනෙකුට මේවා හුදු අභ්‍යාස පමණක් සේ පෙනුණත්, මෙය ජාත්‍යන්තර නීතිමය සහ ආරක්ෂක අවශ්‍යතාවක්. ජාත්‍යන්තර සිවිල් ගුවන් සේවා සංවිධානයේ (ICAO) ප්‍රමිතීන්ට අනුව මෙය අනිවාර්ය කරුණක්:

* ICAO Annex 14 (Aerodromes) රෙගුලාසි: ICAO ප්‍රමිතීන්ට අනුව සෑම අන්තර්ජාතික ගුවන් තොටුපළක්ම හදිසි ආපදා සැලැස්මක් (Airport Emergency Plan - AEP) අනිවාර්යයෙන්ම පවත්වා ගත යුතුයි.

* කාලානුරූපී පරීක්ෂාව (Intervals): මෙම හදිසි ආපදා සැලැස්ම ප්‍රායෝගිකව ක්‍රියාත්මක වේදැයි බැලීම සඳහා සෑම වසර දෙකකට වරක්වත් (Not exceeding two years) මෙවැනි පූර්ණ-පරිමාණ හදිසි පෙරහුරුවක් (Full-scale emergency exercise) පැවැත්වීම ICAO මගින් අනිවාර්ය කර තිබෙනවා.

* ඒකාබද්ධ මෙහෙයුම් හැකියාව (Coordination): හදිසි අවස්ථාවකදී ගුවන් තොටුපළේ අභ්‍යන්තර අංශ සහ රෝහල්, පොලිසිය වැනි බාහිර පාර්ශව කොතරම් වේගයෙන් සහ නිවැරදිව ප්‍රතිචාර දක්වනවාද යන්න (Response time & Coordination) පරීක්ෂා කිරීම මෙහි ප්‍රධාන අරමුණයි.

Sri Lanka 2048 as seen through the eyes of Sir Arthur C. Clarke

Sir Arthur C. Clarke, who made Sri Lanka his home for more than five decades, inspired generations to think beyond the limits of the present. Many of the technologies he envisioned from global satellite communications to advances in personal mobility once seemed like science fiction but are now becoming reality.

Sri Lanka is taking an important step in that direction.

The recent discussions held by the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka on the introduction of electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft and Advanced Air Mobility represent more than a conversation about new aviation technology. They reflect a willingness to prepare the country for the future of transportation.

While there is still significant work ahead in developing regulations, infrastructure, safety standards, and operational frameworks, these discussions are an encouraging milestone toward embracing next-generation aviation.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT ✈️

A 3-year-old boy gave airport staff a heart attack after hopping onto a baggage claim belt at Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport in Chile.

He escaped his parents for a few seconds and decided the conveyor belt looked like a fun ride.

Luckily, airport staff acted fast, stopped the system, and got him safely.
He was unharmed and reunited with his parents.
