🚀 MERCon LiDAR360 Fast Track Workshop | Workshop Highlights

The MERCon LiDAR360 Fast Track Workshop, organized by the IEEE GRSS Student Branch Chapter-University of Moratuwa and SULECO - Pvt Ltd, was successfully conducted on 31st July 2026 via Zoom.

The session gave participants practical exposure to LiDAR360 and real geospatial data workflows, covering:

🔹 Terrain Model Generation

🔹 Feature Extraction

🔹 Forestry Analysis

🔹 Data Export

Through live demonstrations, real-world datasets, and industry-focused workflows, participants gained hands-on experience with the tools and techniques driving modern LiDAR and geospatial practice.

Our sincere gratitude goes to Dr. Sureka Thiruchittampalam, Prof. Chulantha Jayawardena, Dr. Hiran Chathuranga, and the IEEE GRSS Student Branch Chapter - University of Moratuwa team for making this opportunity possible, and for the generous support throughout. At the Wayamba Robotics Meetup - 2026 ,the Coconut Industry Sector Smart Technology Exhibition and Workshop held at the Northwestern Provincial Council Premises, SULECO - Pvt Ltd was able to engage with government authorities and industrialists to introduce new technologies that can be adopted in the plantation sector. Discussions were also held regarding the practical challenges faced by smallholder plantations and the effective technological solutions that can be implemented to address those issues.
During the engagement, valuable discussions were carried out with the Governor of North Western Province, Mr. Tissa Warnasuriya, regarding the effective utilization of drone technology in the plantation sector. We were also able to introduce the COCOPANEL, a smart geospatial solution for plantation management, highlighting its potential applications for improving efficiency and decision-making within the plantation sector. We were honoured by the attention and interest extended by the Governor during the discussions and technology demonstrations conducted at the exhibition.
Awareness was also raised about new products, advisory services, smart irrigation, pest control methods and new technologies. The Governor was the chief guest, while Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Mr. Namal Karunarathne , Kurunegala District Parliamentarian Mr.Wijayasiri Basnayake, Sri Lankan Ambassador to Indonesia Ms. Dewi Gustina Tobing, the Chief Secretary of North Western Province, the District Secretary of Kurunegala Province, the Chairman of the National Enterprise Development Authority - NEDA, Mr. Lakshman Abeysekara, the Director of the North Western Industrial Services Bureau(ISB) , Mr. Anusha Bandara, and industrialists were present. Afterwards, the Governor visited the exhibition and appreciated the new products of the industrialists.

වයඹ පළාත් සභා පරිශ්‍රයේ පැවති පොල් කර්මාන්ත අංශ සුහුරු තාක්ෂණ ප්‍රදර්ශනය හා වැඩමුළුව 2026 හිදී වැවිලි ක්ෂේත්‍රයේ අනුගමනය කළ හැකි නව තාක්ෂණයන් හඳුන්වා දීම සඳහා රජයේ බලධාරීන් සහ කර්මාන්තකරුවන් සමඟ සම්බන්ධ වීමට සුලේකෝ පුද්ගලික සමාගම වන අප හට හැකි විය. එහිදී කුඩා වතු හිමියන් මුහුණ දෙන ප්‍රායෝගික අභියෝග සහ එම ගැටළු විසඳීම සඳහා ක්‍රියාත්මක කළ හැකි ඵලදායී තාක්ෂණික විසඳුම් පිළිබඳව ද සාකච්ඡා පැවැත්විණි.
එමෙන්ම මෙහිදී වැවිලි ක්ෂේත්‍රයේ ඩ්‍රෝන තාක්ෂණය ඵලදායී ලෙස භාවිතා කිරීම පිළිබඳව වයඹ පළාත් ගරු ආණ්ඩුකාර තිස්ස වර්ණසූරිය මැතිතුමා සමඟ වටිනා සාකච්ඡා පැවැත්විණි. එසේම වතු කළමනාකරණය සඳහා ස්මාට් භූ අවකාශ විසඳුමක් වන COCOPANEL හඳුන්වා දීමට ද අපට හැකි වූ අතර,අප විසින් වැවිලි අංශය තුළ කාර්යක්ෂමතාව සහ තීරණ ගැනීම වැඩිදියුණු කිරීම සඳහා එය යොදාගත හැකි ආකාරය පිළිබඳව ද පැහැදිලි කරන ලදී.මෙහිදී ප්‍රදර්ශනයේ පැවති සාකච්ඡා සහ තාක්ෂණ නිරූපණ අතරතුර එතුමා විසින් දක්වන ලද අවධානය සහ උනන්දුව අපහට මහත් ගෞරවයකි.
නව නිෂ්පාදන, උපදේශන සේවා, ස්මාර්ට් වාරිමාර්ග ක්‍රම, පළිබෝධ පාලන ක්‍රම සහ නව තාක්ෂණයන් පිළිබඳව ද දැනුවත් කිරීමක් සිදු කරන ලදී. ගරු ආණ්ඩුකාරතුමා ප්‍රධාන ආරාධිත අමුත්තා ලෙස සහභාගී වූ අතර, කෘෂිකර්ම හා පශු සම්පත් නියෝජ්‍ය අමාත්‍ය නාමල් කරුණාරත්න මැතිතුමා, කුරුණෑගල දිස්ත්‍රික් පාර්ලිමේන්තු මන්ත්‍රී විජයසිරි බස්නායක මැතිතුමා, ඉන්දුනීසියාවේ ශ්‍රී ලංකා තානාපති දේවි ගුස්ටිනා ටොබින් මැතිණිය, වයඹ පළාත් ප්‍රධාන ලේකම්තුමා, කුරුණෑගල පළාත් දිස්ත්‍රික් ලේකම්තුමා, ජාතික ව්‍යවසාය සංවර්ධන අධිකාරියේ සභාපති ලක්ෂ්මන් අබේසේකර මහතා සහ වයඹ කාර්මික සේවා කාර්යාංශයේ (ISB) අධ්‍යක්ෂ අනුෂ බණ්ඩාර මහතා ඇතුළු කර්මාන්තකරුවන් සහභාගී විය. පසුව, ආණ්ඩුකාරතුමා ප්‍රදර්ශනය නැරඹීමට පැමිණ කර්මාන්තකරුවන්ගේ නව නිෂ්පාදන අගය කළේය.

Day 2 of GreenValley International’s LiDAR360 Certified Course with the Remote Sensing Specialization students of the Faculty of Geomatics, Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka was successfully concluded, marking the completion of a valuable two-day learning experience.

The sessions provided students with hands-on exposure to LiDAR data processing and modern geospatial applications using MLS and , with great enthusiasm and active participation shown throughout the program.

A special thank you to the Faculty of Geomatics, the Dean of the Faculty Dr. Sanka Perera, Mr. Chaminda Bandara Senavirathna, and all participating students for their support and collaboration. Sri Lanka's agriculture sector is in a state of significant change due to the increase in temperature extremes caused by the intensifying El Niño phenomenon. The rise in temperature, coupled with water scarcity, can no longer be considered an occasional factor in agriculture, as these conditions are now persistent and directly affect crops such as paddy and tea.Addressing these conditions requires more than conventional responses; it demands a shift toward intelligent, data-driven agricultural management powered by GeoAI.

By integrating geospatial data, artificial intelligence, and advanced sensing technologies into a unified analytical framework, GIS is transforming how farmers understand and respond to environmental stress. Traditional methods often rely on visible signs of crop damage, which typically appear too late. In contrast, GeoAI enables continuous monitoring and early detection, allowing farmers to act before stress becomes irreversible. This shift from reactive to proactive agriculture is essential in maintaining productivity under changing climate conditions.

The foundation of this transformation lies in accurate and timely data collection. Satellite platforms such as Landsat 8, equipped with Thermal Infrared Radiation (TIR) sensors, provide detailed surface temperature data that can reveal hidden crop stress. Elevated canopy temperatures often indicate dehydration, pest infestation, or disease, offering early warning signals that support targeted and timely interventions.

At Spatio, these thermal insights are integrated into broader farm management workflows. When combined with IoT-enabled soil moisture and temperature sensors, farmers gain real-time visibility into field conditions. This allows irrigation to be applied precisely where it is needed, rather than uniformly across entire fields. Such precision is especially vital in Sri Lanka’s dry zone, where efficient water management is critical during prolonged dry periods.
Beyond irrigation, geospatial intelligence also supports operational decision-making by monitoring environmental thresholds that may affect farm machinery and automated systems. This ensures smoother operations and reduces the risk of costly breakdowns.

By the year 2030, 80% of the world’s population will be living in cities, posing unprecedented challenges to the infrastructure and equity of cities. Conventional and static planning tools and techniques are no longer adequate. This is where the "New Urban Science" comes into play, which is a paradigm shift resulting from the extraordinary integration of Survey Science, GeoAI, and Urban Planning.

But how do these three distinct fields actually work together, and how can professionals contribute to this ecosystem using spatial data? Let’s break it down.

🏙️ The of Modern Urban Systems

📏 Survey Science (The ): Dubbed "Surveyor 4.0", the job of the surveyor has changed from data gathering to high-level analysis and strategic consulting. With multi-sensor technology such as LiDAR, mobile mapping, and UAVs, survey science delivers the rigorous, high-precision data gathering and essential QA/QC frameworks necessary to bring AI models back down to earth.

🧠 GeoAI (The ): GeoAI is the engine that powers the computation, integrating Geographic Information Systems (GIS) with machine learning and deep learning such as CNNs. GeoAI can automatically extract complex features from survey data and analyze huge amounts of spatial big data to reveal underlying patterns and trends.

🏗️ Urban Planning (The ): Planners use these predictive insights to move from descriptive mapping to prescriptive decision-making. GeoAI enables planners to dynamically map functional zones in cities, assess transit equity, model climate resilience, and design sustainable infrastructure.

💡 How to Contribute Using Spatial Data

🟣 Integrate GeoAI models with high-resolution satellite imagery, UAV data, IoT sensors, and GPS data to understand environmental and behavioral patterns.

🟣 Ground truthing is still necessary. Verify the AI-produced spatial results with human knowledge. By applying fundamental survey concepts, positional accuracy, completeness, and validity are guaranteed.

🟣 Distributed spatial computing is essential for managing the vast amounts of urban big data. Solutions include utilizing Apache Sedona, which enhances Apache Spark for large-scale spatial operations, or employing edge computing with drones and IoT sensors to minimize latency for real-time urban management.

🟣 Mitigate data bias by integrating socio-economic data with community feedback. By incorporating Human-in-the-Loop solutions and fairness analysis, spatial justice, not just efficiency, is achieved.
