Huawei, together with Times Higher Education, has released new insights from its latest white paper on AI and digital maturity across APAC universities — with valuable relevance for the future of higher education in Sri Lanka.

As universities across the region accelerate digital transformation, the report highlights that while strong digital foundations are already being built, the journey toward meaningful AI impact is still evolving. Advanced AI tools, smart infrastructure, and research computing capabilities remain unevenly adopted across institutions.

The findings identify three key challenges facing higher education today:
• Limited AI integration in teaching and learning
• Unequal access to advanced research computing resources
• The growing challenge of turning digital strategies into measurable real-world outcomes

For Sri Lanka, closing these gaps will be essential to empowering universities, enabling innovation, and preparing the next generation for an AI-driven future.
