How to Build an Investable Startups: Insights from Sivarajah Ramanathan

In his inaugural public address in Sri Lanka at TRACE Expert City, Sivarajah Ramanathan, former CEO of the Tamil Nadu Startup and Innovation Mission (TANSIM), shared critical insights on building investable startups and thriving startup ecosystems. Drawing from his experience in scaling Tamil Nadu’s startup ecosystem from 42 to nearly 16,000 registered startups, Ramanathan highlighted the shift from traditional business models to high-growth, scalable ventures.

At the core of an investable startup is a repeatable and scalable business model. A startup must deliver a standard product or service that consistently serves identical customer needs without needing to reinvent its processes each time. True scalability occurs when revenues outpace operational costs, a dynamic often accelerated by seamlessly integrating existing technologies, much like how ride-hailing platforms combine geolocation, mobile payments, and smartphones.

Addressing the regional startup landscape, Ramanathan stressed the necessity of structured angel investment networks and venture capital frameworks. Early-stage funding requires educating high-net-worth individuals to view startup funding as a high-risk, high-reward alternative asset class managed through a diversified portfolio.

For emerging markets like Sri Lanka, fostering resilience and building institutional trust among young innovators are paramount. By leveraging specialized incubators, reverse-engineering existing industrial capabilities, and embracing social impact enterprises, startups can drive sustainable economic growth across regions.
