Octothorpe #

The famous ‘Hashtag’ actually has previous names such as ‘Number sign’ and ‘Pound sign’. It comes from the 14th century Latin abbreviation ‘lb’ or ‘pound weight’. The lb morphed into the #.

In the 1960s Bell Lab modified the telephone keypad and added this symbol to send information to the operating system. They called it octo-Thorpe combining the 8 edged nature of it and after the Norse word for field ‘Thorpe’ which concludes the meaning to ‘eight fields’...or in memory of Olympian Jim Thorpe by Bell lab employee Dan MacPherson.

We want to go with the Thorpe story because it makes us ponder why did Don MacPherson from Bell labs name it after an Olympian.

Dagger †

The Dagger indicates a footnote, if an Asterisk is already in use. It’s one of the derivations of the Obelus; a historical mark that marked content suspected of being corrupt. The act of ‘cutting out’ incorrect details and the meaning of the Obelus; a sharp ended object; gave rise to this aesthetic form of the Dagger.

Our favorite use of the Dagger though is the indication of death. If placed along with the name of an individual this means that person is deceased. In this context it’s called a ‘Death Dagger’.

What profound storytelling through a symbol. An emotional glyph? We like to think so. There is many more historical stories around the Dagger, but for now we will have to give the Dagger story a rest.

Ellipsis...

An Ellipsis usually indicates an unfinished thought. And an unfinished thought is usually busy on its way somewhere. And most of the time you never know where. This pandemic made us all have many unfinished thoughts. And we too had plenty.

So we are back, with nothing but unfinished thoughts.

One final experiment for the 2019. Here’s what we call a ‘Color Diaphragm’. It’s a color block structure made based on certain color formula. Here you see how two diaphragms of the same color formula can work together. Will explain how to build color formulas later. Color formulas are great to have before you develop patterns. We will also work on a diaphragms of other shapes soon! May your 2020 be filled with design experiments our dear Rioters! 🔥 #2020
