This year marks a decade since the tragic passing of Station Beirut’s co-founder, visual artist and social activist Leila Alaoui.
Leila’s practice focused on drawing attention to themes dear to her – cultural diversity around the Mediterranean, sub-Saharan migration, Swana women’s rights, advocating against racism and the exoticization of the Western gaze. Through her sensitive framing and anthropological approach, Leila sought to show the humanity of people so often kept invisible, reduced to statistics. Each face bears witness to the tragedy of exile and the resilience of the uprooted. Each image tells a story, affirms human dignity and seeks to kindle empathy against indifference.
The Leila Alaoui Foundation is organizing a year-long series of commemorative events throughout 2026.
THE OTHER is presented at the Centre des Arts in Geneva, Switzerland, curated by the Foundation’s art historian, Lara Milosevic. The exhibition features notable photographic series The Moroccans, No Pasara and Natreen, alongside later works like Made in India, Crossings and for the first time My Fair Home.
