What looks like a river of lights actually began with a story from one of Korea’s most important battles.

Every autumn, the Namgang River in Jinju fills with thousands of lanterns, turning the city into one of Korea’s most spectacular night festivals. But these lights carry much more than just visual impact 🏮

During the 1592 Battle of Jinju, lanterns were floated on the Namgang to prevent enemy forces from crossing the river at night and were also used to send news to families outside the fortress. After the battles, the lantern tradition became a way for people to remember those who lost their lives and pray for peace.

Today, that history has evolved into the Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival, where the lanterns also carry something much more personal: people’s wishes. Visitors can write their own wishes on somangdeung (wish lanterns), add them to the display, or take part in floating a lantern on the river.

💡 Insider tip: Don’t arrive only after it gets dark. Come before sunset, explore Jinju Fortress first, then stay for the lanterns to light up from 18:00. Seeing the fortress, river and lanterns change from daylight to night is part of the experience.

A mask can hide your identity, but at this festival, it tells a story 🎭

The Andong International Mask Dance Festival brings mask traditions from around the world together with Andong’s own mask dance heritage. In 2026, 24 countries and 28 international teams are participating, making the festival a unique meeting point for cultures through dance, music and performance.

This year’s theme, “Memories of Masks, Everyone’s Dance,” reflects the stories and memories carried through masks and the idea that dance can be shared by everyone.

🎭 You can experience • International & Korean mask dance performances • World Mask Dance Competition • Global Mask Parade • Street & outdoor performances • Mask-making & other experience booths • Traditional & contemporary performances • Seonyu Julbulnori at Hahoe Village

The experience booths are worth checking out too. You can make your own mask, try different cultural activities, and even make your own T-shirt with cute festival prints👕

💡 Good to know before you go: The festival is spread across Talchum Park, Jungang Line 1942 Andong Station, Andong’s old downtown and Hahoe Village, so check the schedule and plan your route in advance. If you’re driving, we recommend using the designated parking areas and shuttle buses instead of trying to park right next to the busiest festival areas.

🔥 If you’re heading to Hahoe Village, check out Seonyu Julbulnori, a traditional night performance featuring fire, boats and floating lights. In 2026, it takes place on Sep 26, Oct 3 & Oct 4.

🎟️ One more thing to remember: If you buy a ticket for a festival performance, you can receive a ₩2,000 탈춤사랑쿠폰 when exchanging your ticket. It can be used at participating businesses around the festival grounds and old downtown, so keep it and use it during your visit!

🏠 Good to know before booking
Rooms are separated by gender. Private rooms depend on availability, while shared rooms may accommodate around 3 to 6 people. Some traditional accommodations also have showers and restrooms located outside the room.

For us, the setting was one of the biggest reasons to choose Naksansa. You get the mountains, the East Sea, and the chance to experience the temple when it feels much quieter than during a normal daytime visit.
