Covid-19 has impacted the workplace so much so that it is almost unrecognizable. With social-distancing and cashless payments, we are currently in a revolutionary state of doing things in every aspect. From the way we live to the way we work, adjusting is the new norm.
Like any other workplace change, making sure employees are aware and understand this new world will be equally as important as the actual changes themselves. Training, education and effective communication are key to returning employees to the workplace.
Below are a number of tips to keep in mind as you communicate return-to-workplace situations:
• Communicate simply and clearly Use of grammatical jargons to explain simple concepts may actually be detrimental to your organizations productivity. Employees need to understand exactly what it is you are communicating in order for them to make good on time and quality.
• Seek legal counsel where necessary. In this Covid-19 era, it is possible that you may be forced to lay-off or retrench individuals. Chances are you may also have to change some of your policies especially in the HR department. In doing this, it is important to steer clear of perceptions of discrimination and other potential employee relations or legal issues.
• Engage senior leaders. As much as social media has made it easier to get in touch with employees, it is crucial that ensure senior management is aware of on-goings within the employees’ circles.
• Develop a detailed work plan
It is crucial to review any policies that may not work with the onset of Covid-19 such as clocking in and clocking out.
• Train frontline managers and supervisors on your new work plan Frontline managers and supervisors need to be trained on how to organize employees in their respective fields considering the Covid-19 guidelines need to be enforced even at the workplace.
• Incorporate Various Media
The various social platforms are providing various features for organizations to use at their disposal. Hold a webinar and record it. Create a video, leverage your online employee portal, or do a podcast. Also use images and diagrams where appropriate. Studies have previously shown that people pay more attention to detail when there are images or diagrams to be viewed. It also helps employees to understand concepts better because our brains are wired that way.
• Update employees
Even with remote working, keep employees up-to-date on the organization’s plan to return to normalcy or its new way of doing things. It makes the feel important to the organization. Also, take note of their recommendations and ideas.Tools such as E-supervisor come in handy for managers in such matters.
