We’re excited to open Fiber Mtaani Cohort 3, the next phase of our hands-on digital skills training academy focused on fiber optics and network engineering.

So far, Fiber Mtaani has equipped over 200 young people with practical, job-ready fiber optic skills, and over 150 graduates have already been placed into job opportunities across this fast-growing industry in Kenya and across Africa. Beyond training, we’re building a strong technical community that supports digital inclusion by ensuring skilled technicians are available to build and maintain smart networks.

📸 Day 4: Full FTTH Simulation — From Plan to Client Activation!

On Day 4, Fiber Mtaani Cohort 2 leveled up with a full FTTH (Fiber to the Home) Simulation Project — a complete end-to-end deployment experience! 🏠🌐🔧

Working in teams, students built over 250m+ of fiber route, combining everything they’ve learned from theory to practicals.

🚧 Project Scope Included:
✅ Trenching & duct laying
✅ Aerial fiber deployment
✅ FAT (Fiber Access Terminal) setup
✅ Splice closures, slack loops & termination
✅ Final client installation & activation

📋 Deliverables:
✔️ A clean, standards-compliant live FTTH setup
✔️ Team leaders submitted detailed project reports (Design, BOQ & Quality Check)

This was more than training — it was a real-world challenge that tested planning, teamwork, ex*****on, and professionalism. And they delivered! 💪

📸 Station 4: Splicing & Troubleshooting — Precision in Practice

At Station 4, Cohort 2 trainees dove into the heart of fiber connectivity — Fusion Splicing and Troubleshooting — where precision and accuracy are everything. 🔍🔌💡

Led by our expert trainers, this station focused on hands-on work with essential fiber tools and techniques.

🎯 Key activities included:
✅ Performing fusion splicing to join fiber ends with minimal loss
✅ Using OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) to test fiber links and identify faults
✅ Conducting link troubleshooting to detect and resolve common issues in fiber deployments

Students got to handle real equipment, analyze test results, and understand how to maintain high-quality connections in the field.

This is where theory meets the fiber — and our trainees nailed it! 👏

📸 Station 3: Underground Fiber — The Underground Routing Bay

Led by Boaz Tanui, Station 3 took students below the surface with an in-depth look at Underground Fiber Deployment — covering everything from trenching to fiber protection systems. 🚧📦🛠️

With spades in hand and safety gear on, trainees tackled real-world underground routing challenges while meeting key objectives.

🎯 By the end of this station, participants could:
✅ Understand trenching depth, width, and layout standards for fiber networks
✅ Practice safe excavation and identify common underground hazards
✅ Install conduits and microducts with proper alignment and bend radius
✅ Apply bedding, backfilling, and correctly place warning tape for protection
✅ Recognize the importance of documentation and building with future-proofing in mind

This station showed that strong networks start from the ground up — literally! 💪🌍

📸 Station 2: Pole Dressing & Fiber Stringing — Aerial Deployment Strip

At Station 2, trainees got hands-on with the real art of aerial deployment, led by Joshua Waweru. This session focused on Pole Dressing, ADSS Cable Handling, and Suspension Hardware Installation. 🌐📏🛠️

By the end of this station, participants were equipped to:
✅ Understand the characteristics of ADSS (All-Dielectric Self-Supporting) cables
✅ Safely deploy aerial fiber between poles with proper clearances
✅ Install and tension suspension clamps, dead-end grips, and downlead clamps
✅ Apply correct sag and tension principles for stable, long-lasting spans
✅ Neatly dress poles using strain relief and service loops for a professional finish

This session reinforced the precision, safety, and technique needed to build a clean and reliable aerial fiber network. 💪🎯

📸 Station 1: Pole Climbing & Safety — The Heights & Harness Zone

Led by Jasper Kagori, Station 1 took trainees straight to the top — literally! This session focused on Work at Height, Pole Climbing, and Harness & Fall Protection, giving students critical field safety skills. 🧗‍♂️🦺🌲

By the end of this hands-on station, participants were able to:
✅ Inspect wood, metal, and concrete poles for safety before climbing
✅ Properly fit and adjust all climbing gear — harness, lanyard, climbers, helmet & gloves
✅ Demonstrate correct climbing technique using gaffs/spikes
✅ Use positioning straps to simulate hands-free work at height
✅ Apply fall prevention, clear communication, and emergency protocols

The energy, focus, and courage shown at this station proved that these future techs are ready to climb safely — and lead confidently. 💪

Cohort 2 took things to the next level with 4 intensive, hands-on stations covering the core practicals of fiber deployment. 💪🔧💡

Students rotated through each session, applying what they've learned in real-world scenarios under expert guidance.

Climbing drills, harness use, and hazard awareness to ensure safety at height. 🧗‍♂️🦺

🛠️ Station 2: Pole Dressing & Fiber Stringing
Mastering lashing, slack management, and proper clamp installations for clean aerial deployments. 🌐

🛠️ Station 3: Underground Fiber Works
Trenching, duct laying, and manhole setup to understand underground fiber infrastructure. 🚧

🛠️ Station 4: Splicing & Troubleshooting
Hands-on fusion splicing, OTDR testing, and link fault analysis for reliable fiber connections. 🔍🔌
