Alex Wafula: How Staff Used Software to Erase Sales and Loot Millions From My Supermarket

Alex Wafula, the proprietor of United Supermarket in Chwele, Bungoma County has revealed a 20 month fraud scheme that saw his venture lose millions of shillings.

The fraud involved three employees: a cashier, software contractor and back office clerk. Goods were sold, paid for, then receipts erased from the system. After the cashier received the payment, he would communicate with the software guy to erase trails for the daily loot.

The cashier would then pocket the said cash which they shared in the ratio of 1:2:2 with the cashier receiving the least.

Wafula revealed stock taking would have helped detect the fraud but the software contractor would be tipped to manipulate the payment system and revert the transactions prior to the exercise.

The fraud saw the proprietor lose millions of shillings as it went on for 20 months. Wafula then began struggling to pay back his loans and decided to do an audit.

It was then that the fraud scheme was unearthed. Arrests have been made and investigations are underway. The suspects will be arraigned on 24th of this month.

Building his supermarket

Mr Wafula is a humble teacher who built his venture through a bank loan. His journey has not been an easy one as he previously had his truck stolen. In August 2025, a security guard at United Chwele Supermarket at night was reportedly killed by criminals.
