Though Kenya has a lot of young people wishing to find deployment in software development, large-scale projects are currently outsourced to international firms. This is due to limited local capability; the people in Kenya are well educated and have good knowledge of IT, but their modern project management is not up to speed. Progress in development of the Kenyan IT sector is limited by lack of opp
ortunity to learn international best practices. To resolve this problem Fair Trade Software provides Kenyan developers the opportunity to participate in international projects and vocational training under the name CodePamoja (which means “Coding Together” in Swahili). CodePamoja is part of the bigger Fair Trade initiative. It is a collaboration between Dutch firm Competa and Kenyan partners BTI Millman and DewCIS and is funded by non-profit organization Sequa. Together we focus on the development of the IT sector in Kenya and on building the local economy.
