In 1910, Scotland set up a human zoo known as 'The Somali Village' to showcase a traditional Somali settlement. Approximately 70 Somalis were transported to Scotland and housed in the huts and paid to "perform" aspects of Somali daily life, including staged spear fights and cultural demonstrations, for paying visitors who came to gawk at them as an exotic spectacle.
