One thing I wish more businesses understood about technology:

The day the installation is completed is not the day our job should end.

I’ve been in the service business for years, and one thing I’ve learned is that a client doesn’t only need you when something has already gone wrong.

They need you before it goes wrong.

A CCTV camera can work perfectly today and have a problem six months later.

A network that was properly installed can develop issues after other contractors start moving things around.

A PBX can work perfectly until someone changes a configuration.

A solar system can perform well today, but batteries, connections and other components still need to be checked and maintained.

That’s why I’ve come to appreciate Service Level Agreements (SLAs).

Good maintenance isn’t about waiting for something to break.

It’s about reducing the chances of it breaking in the first place.

And after years of running a technical service business, one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is this:

Don’t just sell the installation. Build the relationship that keeps the installation working.

That’s how you move from being a supplier to becoming a technology partner.
