APPLE RELEASES IOS 12.3 WITH NEW TV APP AND CHANNELS FEATURE:

Apple today released iOS 12.3, the third major update to the iOS 12 operating system that first launched in September 2018. iOS 12.3 comes over a month after the release of iOS 12.2, an update that introduced the Apple News+ service, brought new Animoji, and included dozens of other changes.

The iOS 12.3 update is available on all eligible devices over-the-air in the Settings app. To access the update, go to Settings > General > Software Update. As with all iOS updates, iOS 12.3 is free to download, but it may take some time for iOS 12.3 to propagate to all iOS users.

Much of the iOS 12.3 update focuses on the TV app, which has been overhauled and enhanced with a new look and fresh functionality. Apple first introduced the updated TV app at its March 25 event, and after several weeks of beta testing, the new app is ready for its launch.

IPHONE OWNERS CAN SUE APPLE FOR MONOPOLIZING APP STORE, SUPREME COURT RULES:

A group of iPhone owners who accuse Apple of violating US antitrust rules can sue the company, the Supreme Court ruled Monday. They claim Apple's App Store is a monopoly.

Justice Brett Kavanaugh, in the majority opinion, said that when "retailers engage in unlawful anticompetitive conduct that harms consumers," people buying those companies' products have the right to hold the businesses to account.

"That is why we have antitrust law," Kavanaugh wrote. The court's four liberal justices joined Kavanaugh in the 5-4 decision.

The case dates back to a 2011 class action suit filed by iOS users. The plaintiffs alleged that the 30% of revenue that Apple takes from developers who sell their wares through the App Store, encourages higher prices for iOS apps.

And because iOS is a closed system, iPhone and iPad users are forced to purchase apps only from Apple's official storefront. Android, which is an open system, allows users to sideload apps from third-party app stores.

Apple responded by saying that it is only an "intermediary" and shouldn't be a party to such a suit. With the decision today, the Supreme Court, disagrees with the tech giant.

"After much effort, we've concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards and we have cancelled the project. We apologize to those customers who were looking forward to this launch. We continue to believe that the future is wireless and are committed to push the wireless experience forward."

SPOTIFY RESPONDS TO APPLE, CALLING IT A ‘MONOPOLIST’:

The tit-for-tat war of words between Spotify and Apple continued today, with the former calling the latter a “monopolist,” and that its response to the lawsuit was “entirely in line with our expectations,” according to Variety.

The statement is the latest in a highly public spat between the two companies. On Wednesday, Spotify filed a complaint with the European Union, alleging that Apple uses unfair practices in the App Store. Specifically, Spotify is upset at the 30 percent that Apple charges developers for subscriptions, and it says that it’s designed to give Apple Music an unfair advantage in the marketplace. Essentially, to match Apple’s price with its 30 percent cut, it can’t match the price of Apple Music, and it’s at the mercy of Apple’s technical restrictions. It also launched a website called Time to Play Fair, where it outlined its complaints against Apple.

Apple pushed back on Spotify’s claims yesterday, saying that Spotify “wants all the benefits of a free app without being free,” that it conveniently left out that Apple’s 30 percent cut drops to 15 percent after a year, and that only a “tiny fraction” of subscribers sign up via the App store.

APPLE CONFIRMS MARCH 25TH EVENT, EXPECTED TO ANNOUNCE NEW TV SERVICE:

Apple has officially confirmed that it will hold an event on March 25th where it’s is expected to announce its long-rumored TV streaming and Apple News subscription services.

As usual, the invitation doesn’t have much to go by, but the animated countdown GIF and “It’s show time” tag seem to hint that the new TV service will play a big role.

Rumors of an event at the end of March began last month, saying that the company will reportedly focus exclusively on services.

Although, there is always a chance that we could see the anticipated announcements of revamped AirPods, a new entry-level iPad, and the long-delayed AirPower wireless charging pad

APPLE MUSIC THE ONLY MAJOR STREAMING SERVICE NOT APPEALING ROYALTY INCREASE FOR SONGWRITERS:

Spotify, Google, Pandora, and Amazon are all coming together to appeal a recent U.S. Copyright Royalty Board ruling that would see songwriter royalty payouts increase by 44 percent.

Apple, meanwhile, is seemingly the only major streaming service not planning to appeal.

Back in January, the Copyright Royalty Board ruled to increase songwriter streaming rates by 44 percent. At the time, it was believed that the change would benefit Apple, Amazon, and Spotify, as they could weather the increased costs better than smaller streaming music services.

Under this ruling, streaming services will be required to pay songwriters and publishers 15.1 percent of revenue, up from 10.5 percent.

Variety reports today, however, that Spotify, Google, Pandora, and Amazon have all teamed up to appeal the ruling. In a joint statement, Google, Spotify, and Pandora said the songwriting rate hike will harm music licensees as well as copyright holders:

“The Copyright Royalty Board (CRB), in a split decision, recently issued the U.S. mechanical statutory rates in a manner that raises serious procedural and substantive concerns. If left to stand, the CRB’s decision harms both music licensees and copyright owners. Accordingly, we are asking the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit to review the decision.”

According to the report, Apple will not appeal the ruling, making it the only major streaming service to take such a stance:

Sources say that Apple Music is alone among the major streaming services in not planning to appeal — as confirmed by songwriters’ orgs rushing to heap praise on Apple while condemning the seemingly unified front of the other digital companies.

Apple’s stance on the issue has earned it praise from some in the songwriting industry. David Israelite, CEO of the National Music Publishers’ Association, praised Apple for continuing to be a friend of songwriters:

“We thank Apple Music for accepting the CRB decision and continuing to be a friend to songwriters,” he said. “While Spotify and Amazon surely hope this will play out in a quiet appellate courtroom, every songwriter and every fan of music should stand up and take notice.”
