"The stare of a starling" đź’™

Capturing this incredible moment of a Superb Starling (Lamprotornis superbus) with its intense, forward-facing gaze and piercing cream-colored eyes. ✨

Native to East Africa, these birds are known for their spectacular, iridescent plumage that shifts from deep cobalt blue to vivid turquoise in the sunlight. Beyond their stunning looks, Superb Starlings are highly social and intelligent creatures, often found in noisy, busy groups that can bright up any landscape with their chatter and brilliant color. This individual seems to have a lot to say!

Frozen in Time ✨

Did you know the Red-faced Pytilia (Pytilia afra) can beat its wings up to 30 times per second? In this shot, I’ve captured a single moment of this incredible speed, freezing it to reveal the stunning detail and color of this tiny African bird. From the vivid red face to the intricate patterns on its wings, it’s a tiny masterpiece of nature.

It’s easy to forget the complexity and beauty that exists in the blink of an eye. 💫

What do you find most fascinating about bird flight?

These are Red-billed Queleas (Quelea quelea) - Africa’s most abundant wild bird - hitting the grass-seed buffet.

Watch one land, three more launch. That streaky brown plumage + yellow eyebrow = non-breeding or female quelea. The males go full black-faced with a bright red bill when it’s breeding season.

Nicknamed “locust birds” for how they swarm in millions, but here it’s just a quiet moment by the wall. Seeds today, sky tomorrow.

The Stare Down
When you realize the drongo heard everything you just said.

Fork-tailed Drongo (Dicrurus adsimilis) serving glossy black plumage, a forked tail, and pure judgment. They’re fearless - known to mob eagles twice their size. Zero chill, all charisma.

The Hunt Mode
Intensity level: drongo.

Fork-tailed Drongo (Dicrurus adsimilis) in stealth mode. They’ll perch motionless, scan, then sally out to sn**ch insects mid-air. Also famous for mimicking 30+ species to steal food. Brain > brawn.

The Launch
Caught mid-launch. No runway needed.

Fork-tailed Drongo (Dicrurus adsimilis) showing why they’re the savanna’s best aerial acrobats. Those fanned wings flash pale inner feathers to confuse predators - and prey. Red eye = locked on target.
