The other day I looked around my craft studio and realized I didn't even have one of the most basic elements you can have in a workspace - a calendar! I have one at home, but didn't even think about my studio . . . which is funny because I always like to keep track of the day and date, given that they get away from me a lot (I'm forgetful!). Instead of purchasing a calendar, I decided it would be easy to make one - and fell in love with the idea of a perpetual calendar that could be used year after year! Since it's my craft studio I decided I wanted it to be colorful and inspiring, and the watercolor trend I'm seeing everywhere these days is the theme I decided to go with. Armed with a few supplies and a free printable (that you can get below), I made this simple calendar. It stacks on my desk, looks pretty, and keeps me straight when it comes to the date. Here's how I did it! Supplies: HP ENVY 7640 e-AiO Printer + HP Original Ink HP Premium Inkjet Matte Presentation Paper Mod Podge Hard Coat Wood blocks, 2" - four blocks White spray paint Craft knife and mat Ruler Scissors Paintbrush Brayer (optional) Perpetual calendar download - (provided below) Step 1 Spray paint your blocks using the white spray paint. Make sure to cover your surface and then read the instructions on the can for proper application. You'll want to spray paint all six sides of the wood blocks and let them dry. Make you're in a well-ventilated space. Step 2 Print out both printables (provided below) onto HP Premium Inkjet Matte Presentation Paper. Begin by trimming off the outside edge of both pages using your craft knife, mat and ruler. TIP #1: The sheets are organized so that the top six squares go on one block and the bottom six on another. Date block one should have 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6. Date block two should have 0, 1, 2, 4, 7, and 8. I recommend keeping your squares organized as you cut. Step 3 Continue cutting the squares down using your craft knife, mat and ruler. Step 4 I found that it was easier to cut the squares using my scissors when I got down to the final cuts. But I'll leave that up to you - you can still use your craft knife! Step 5 Now you're going to Mod Podge down the squares. Start with one side on each block. Apply a medium coat of Mod Podge to the top. Step 6 Place a square to the top of the block, in the center, and smooth it down. Step 7 Use your hands to smooth, or you can use a brayer - I love mine! Simply wipe away any excess Mod Podge that squeezes out the side with your brush. Once you do this on one side, do it on one side for the second, third, and fourth blocks. By the time you are done, you can go back to the first block and it will be dry enough for you to apply another square. Keep going in this way until all sides of the blocks are covered! Let them dry. Step 8 To finish, seal all of the blocks with a medium coat of Mod Podge. Step 9 Let your blocks completely dry before using them. You'll display your calendar by placing the month block and the day block on the bottom - and stack the date on top. I love how the colors change each day depending on the date - I really enjoy looking at it! Wouldn't this make a pretty addition to your studio or workspace? I'd love for you to make this project and submit it to our Idea Exchange! - Amy, Mod Podge Rocks

OK, you know both go into (and come out of) printers, but do you know what the separate characteristics of ink and toner are?

My neighbors have gotten used to seeing some of my handmade items around our place. The other day I was asked by a friend "when are you going to create a DIY doormat?" I realized that she was right - I needed to change out my every day, store bought doormat for something personalized and a bit more festive for the upcoming holiday. I decided that this DIY Halloween doormat was the perfect solution! Not only is it easy to make, but the next time my neighbor asks, I can say "I did that!" Supplies: HP ENVY 7640 e-AiO Printer + HP Original Ink HP Premium Inkjet Matte Presentation Paper Natural doormat - mine was 18" x 30" but it doesn't need to be the exact same size Halloween doormat printable (provided below) Black and white spray paint Craft knife and mat Painter's tape Scissors Extra scrap paper or packing paper to protect your surface Step 1 Print out the attached printable (provided below) on the HP Premium Inkjet Matte Presentation Paper - to get a mat just like mine, you'll need to print all of the printable designs included! Use your craft knife to cut your largest bats and the moon but don't throw away the centers. You're first going to plan your design with these centers. Step 2 Your stencils will look like this; keep them all together until your design is planned. Step 3 This is where you're going to use those center pieces to plan your design. Your mat might not be the exact same size as mine, in which case this step is important. TIP #1: You may end up needing to print out a few extra pages or not use all of the pages if you need to increase or decrease the size of your design. Step 4 Once you've decided on your design, cut your final bats out of the final page. Again, you may not need all of these bats - but we'll leave this page intact for now. Step 5 Grab your largest bat stencils and arrange them as you did in step 3. Trim the pages with scissors as necessary to fit your design. Tape the stencils down securely with painter's tape. Step 6 As you prepare to spray paint, make sure that your surface is protected and that the area that is visible but will not be painted is protected with scrap paper. You don't want spray paint to reach these areas. Step 7 Begin spray painting your bat stencils with black spray paint. You'll want to spray directly above the designs and straight down to make the lines clear. Give your bats several coats. TIP #2: You can use acrylic paint and a foam brush for this step. I had spray paint in my stash, but I encourage you to use what you already have to paint! Step 8 Spray paint the moon as well, using the white. You'll want to give it several coats. Once everything is painted, removed the stencils immediately and let them dry. Step 9 Finish up with the smaller bats, overlapping the moon, using the same strategy as you did in steps 5 - 7. We actually learned a cool trick through trial and error - we got some excess spray paint on the mat and simply sanded it off using some 150-grit sandpaper when it was dry. Who knew? The larger bats are more defined and the smaller bats are less defined, just as you might see them in the sky! I love my new Halloween doormat - I've already placed it outside and can't wait for the neighbors to see it. I'd love for you to make this project and submit it to our Idea Exchange. Happy Halloween! - Amy, Mod Podge Rocks
