Not because I don't trust my IT team.
But because IT specifications can become very expensive when nobody asks one simple question:
“Why does this employee actually need this?”
Imagine you're running a company.

Your IT department sends you a quotation:
Core i7
32GB RAM
1TB SSD
Dedicated graphics
For almost every employee.
And you're looking at the quotation thinking:
“Wait… does our receptionist really need the same laptop as our video editor?” 😂
If I were the business owner, these are the steps I'd take.

1. I would stop buying laptops by job title alone.
I'd look at what each employee actually does.
An accountant, receptionist, sales representative, developer and graphic designer don't necessarily have the same workload.

2. I'd ask IT: “Which software requires these specifications?”
Not:
“Why did you choose Core i7?”
But:
“Which applications are we running, and what do they actually require?”
Now we're having a different conversation.

3. I'd create laptop categories.
For example:
Basic productivity
For email, Office, browsing and everyday business work.
Professional
For employees running heavier applications and multitasking.
Power user / workstation
For engineering, architecture, 3D, video production and
other demanding workloads.
Now you're not buying one specification for everyone.

4. I'd ask for the minimum AND recommended specifications.
There's a huge difference between:
“This software can run on this laptop.”
and
“This laptop will give the employee a good working experience.”
I want IT to explain the difference.
5. I'd calculate the cost of being cheap—and the cost of being excessive.
The cheapest laptop can become expensive if employees are constantly frustrated.
But an unnecessarily powerful laptop is also money sitting on a desk doing nothing.
Both are bad procurement decisions.
