Today marks the final day of the International Potato Field Day. Organized by the National Potato Council of Kenya and AGRA, this event showcased the immense potential of the potato value chain in Kenya — a crop that stands as the second most important crop after maize, feeding millions and supporting livelihoods across the country.

Mzizi is proud to be part of this impactful event, led by our passionate associate, Mercy Kanyagia. We engaged with fellow stakeholders to explore opportunities within the potato value chain. We are thrilled to be part of this vibrant event, engaging with farmers, innovators, policymakers, and most importantly — the youth, whose energy and creativity are breathing new life into the agricultural sector.

With over 800,000 smallholder farmers engaged in potato farming and growing demand in urban markets, stakeholders are actively working together to integrate youth into this powerful value chain — from agri-tech solutions to value addition and smart farming practices.

👏 Here's to a future where potatoes are not just food, but a source of jobs, innovation, and prosperity.

We’re thrilled to announce that we have successfully transformed 200 potato farmers with our record-keeping booklets, enabling them to monitor and track their crops with precision and confidence.

Recognizing the diverse needs of our farming community, we’ve embraced a hybrid model—combining the ease of booklet-based tracking with the convenience of app-based tools to ensure that every farmer, regardless of tech access, can manage their farm’s growth efficiently.

By integrating this valuable data, we’re creating traceability scores for our supply chain partners. This ensures that our farmers are not just producing more, but doing so in an ethical, lean, and sustainable way.

Remember: Why did the potato break up with the farmer?
Because it found someone a-peeling! 💔🥔

Over the past months, we’ve had the privilege of meeting kelvin chitayi and Nancy Muindi at various agricultural expos, where we’ve constantly shared insights and perspectives on the critical role of irrigation for rural smallholder farmers. These discussions have highlighted the immense potential of innovative irrigation solutions in transforming the agricultural landscape.

Climate change is significantly impacting agricultural productivity, with unpredictable rainfall patterns and prolonged dry spells leading to crop failures and food insecurity.

While irrigational support for rural smallholder farmers remains a significant challenge, KickStart International’s innovative irrigation solutions are making it easier to irrigate Africa. They have designed affordable, highly reliable, and climate-resilient water pumps that are empowering farmers to transform their practices, increase yields, and build lasting food security.

It’s inspiring to witness the impact Kickstart International is making and how Kelvin and Nancy are at the forefront of bringing these life-changing innovations to those who need them the most.

Empowering rural youth through agricultural projects is not merely about providing jobs; it is about instilling a sense of purpose and community.

By creating platforms that support their involvement in agriculture, we can harness their potential to drive positive change.

By engaging our rural village connectors in agricultural initiatives, rural youth are contributing to food security, sustainable practices, and economic development while fostering a sense of ownership and pride in their work.

Check out what we think about the rural youth, and join our network to stay in the loop:

How hard is it to access certified potato seeds in Timau?

As we wrapped up our field visit with Muguna Gakirikiri CBO in Timau yesterday, one challenge stood out clearly—many farmers in the region still struggle to access certified potato seeds.

Despite well established seed players and suppliers around the region, we realised that individual and non-organised farmers are often left behind, facing significant hurdles in obtaining this critical input compared to well organised and grouped farmers.

While basic economies of scale align behind the organised farmer service model, we believe a more integrated and inclusive approach could be suffice - one that ensures aspiring and non-organized potato farmers also have access to quality seeds and the resources they need to thrive.

Studies confirm that limited access to certified seed is one of the biggest barriers to unlocking higher yields and better incomes for smallholder potato farmers. Without quality seed, productivity stagnates, disease cycles persist, and market competitiveness declines.

With the new potato season fast approaching, we’re calling on seed suppliers, agribusinesses, and ecosystem partners serving Timau to join us in supporting this incredible Potato CBO and VSLA to prepare for a productive upcoming season.

Yesterday, we had the incredible opportunity to connect with Wedgehut Foods Ltd, an innovative potato processing enterprise passionate about potato value addition and dedicated to empowering potato farmers.

During our engaging discussions with Wanjiru Mambo we identified critical challenges that many potato farmers face: access to markets, best practices and key considerations when engaging with off takers and processors, end to end agronomical literacy trainings and post-harvest handling of potatoes.

Market linkage and post-harvest losses in the potato value chain interlink in the climate change vicious cycle.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Kenya potato value chain faces a formidable challenge in the form of post-harvest losses, which is exacerbated by low farmer literacy levels in post-harvest handling, inadequate storage facilities and limited market access. Post-harvest losses account for up to 30% of total potato production in Sub-Saharan Africa, representing a significant economic and environmental burden.

We were happy to find out that Wedgehut Foods Ltd is leading the charge in supporting the potato value chain, targeting to transform the lives of 10,000 potato farmers through their programs and engagements.

Together, we are committed to enhancing information access and equipping smallholder farmers with the tools they need to succeed. We’re excited about the opportunity to collaborate and support their vital initiatives.

Stay tuned for more updates on how we plan to join forces for the betterment of the potato value chain!

Did you know? A staggering 60% of Agroshops and Agrodealers are still stuck in the past—operating offline, missing out on massive growth opportunities in today’s digital world.

While the spotlight has been on farmer digitization, Agrodealer digitization is just as crucial to boomerang farmers into embracing digital technologies. We recognize this crucial gap and we are stepping up to make sure agrodealers aren’t left behind.

Next Wednesday, we are hosting an exclusive Rural Agrodealer Digitization Training Program designed to expand the growth of Agrodealers and Agroshops across Nakuru!

We believe Agrodealers deserve to operate without limits. Through our innovative Online Agrodealer Management System, we balance accountability and productivity, helping each Agrodealer to unlock new opportunities and thrive in the era of data-driven agriculture.

The future of agriculture is digital, and it’s time for Agroshops and Agrodealers to redefine their boundaries.

Join us and embrace this transformative journey!
