Top 10 Mistakes to avoid in your International Teaching Resume

Your resume (or CV, as it's commonly called in international education) is your first opportunity to stand out.

While many teachers focus on highlighting their qualifications, it's equally important to avoid common pitfalls that can quickly land your application in the rejection pile.

Here are the top 10 mistakes to avoid, based on advice from recruitment experts and international school hiring practices:

1. Making Spelling, Grammar, or Formatting Errors

A single typo or inconsistent formatting can make you appear careless—unacceptable for a role model in education. International recruiters scan CVs quickly and often discard error-prone ones immediately. Proofread multiple times, use tools like Grammarly, and ensure clean, professional formatting.

2. Using a Generic, One-Size-Fits-All Resume

Sending the same document to every school ignores specific job requirements, curricula (e.g., IB, British, American), or school ethos. Tailor your CV for each application by incorporating keywords from the job description and emphasizing relevant experience.

3.Keeping It Too Long or Too Short

International teaching applications typically require a detailed CV (2-4 pages), not a concise one-page resume common in some countries. Too short, and you miss showcasing depth; too long, and it overwhelms. Aim for 2 pages, focusing more space on recent, relevant roles.

4.Starting with a Long or Overly Boastful Personal Statement

Many recruiters skip lengthy introductions. Keep your profile summary concise (3-4 sentences) and professional—state your expertise and what you seek, without excessive self-praise

5. Omitting or Hiding Key Personal Details
Unlike in some countries, international CVs may include a professional photo, date of birth, nationality, marital status, and dependents. This helps schools assess visa sponsorship, housing, and package suitability. Excluding them can raise red flags.

6.Not Highlighting International or Cross-Cultural Experience

Schools prioritize teachers adaptable to diverse environments. Failing to emphasize experience with multicultural students, EAL/ESL, travel, or global curricula weakens your application. Even domestic diversity experience counts.

7.Listing Duties Instead of Achievements

Don't just describe responsibilities (e.g., "Taught math to Grade 5"). Quantify impact (e.g., "Improved student math scores by 15% through differentiated instruction"). Use evidence-based results to demonstrate effectiveness.

8.Using Unexplained Acronyms or Jargon

The international field is acronym-heavy (IB, IGCSE, PYP), but assume the reader might not know your local ones. Spell out terms first, then use abbreviations.

9.Neglecting Extracurriculars, Hobbies, or Professional Development

International schools value well-rounded teachers who contribute to clubs, sports, or community. Omitting hobbies (e.g., coaching soccer) or recent PD (e.g., Google Educator certification) misses opportunities to show fit.

10.Including Irrelevant or Outdated Information

Focus on teaching-related content. Avoid non-education jobs, ancient roles, or unrelated details. Prioritize recent experience and relevance to international settings.

By steering clear of these errors, your resume will better showcase your strengths as a global educator.

Always research the specific school and country—customization is key to securing interviews in this exciting field.

Good luck with your international teaching journey!
