A small preview of something we've been working on: we've added an early version of a Cassini/UTM Coordinate Converter to Plotwise.

It lets you select a map sheet, enter Cassini or UTM coordinates from an older Registry Index Map (RIM) or survey record, and see the location on a Google Maps (WGS 84) basemap.

To build it, we combined two Survey of Kenya datasets: the sheet-level control point spreadsheet that many surveyors already know, and detailed control points for each 5×5 grid within every sheet.

For Cassini conversions, Plotwise uses the surrounding validated control points where available, automatically identifies the correct UTM zone, and provides a confidence rating together with an explanation of how the result was calculated.

If you'd like to try it, open the Plotwise map and enable the "Cassini/UTM Sheets" layer.

This is still an early experiment, so we'd appreciate your feedback. If something doesn't look right, send us the sheet number and coordinates and we'll take a look. Some issues may be on our side, while others may come from errors or inconsistencies in the original Survey of Kenya records. For official or legal work, always verify against Survey of Kenya records or consult a licensed surveyor 📐

🗺️ Nairobi has a new zoning policy. We've made it easier to explore.

Plotwise now maps Nairobi County's 2026 Development Control Policy, making it easy to see a location's zone or sub-zone, permitted land use, maximum building levels, ground coverage, plot ratio, minimum plot size, determinants, and any special corridor controls.

The same information is also available when researching individual parcels, so you can see the planning controls that apply to a specific property.

There are some odd things and errors in the new 2026 Nairobi Development Control Policy that could cause confusion. Hopefully the authors do another review so developers and other stakeholders have the clarity they need.

For example, here are the policies for New Muthaiga and Old Muthaiga. The boundary descriptions appear to have been swapped, with each one describing the other area. For example, New Muthaiga, as shown on the map, doesn't extend to Thika Road.

With plans now underway for a major new JKIA terminal, we hope it feels unmistakably Kenyan.

Some airports are memorable because they feel connected to the place they are in. You land once and the architecture, materials, lighting, even the atmosphere stays with you.

PDX is a great example of this. It would be nice to see Kenya’s main gateway lean into that kind of identity and character.
