BEFORE YOU CALL SOMETHING "AI," READ THIS

Everyone's suddenly an AI detective. A post reads a little too smooth and boom, "a robot wrote this." Here's the uncomfortable truth: you're wrong more often than you think, and being wrong here does real damage.
Let me start where most posts end.

THE DETECTORS ARE NOT YOUR FRIEND

Those apps that promise to catch AI writing get it wrong constantly, and they're biased. They flag genuine human work all the time, especially from people who learned English as a second language. Sit with that. Somebody writes their own honest piece, runs it through a "detector," and gets branded a cheat by a tool that just doesn't like how they write.
So whatever comes next, hold it loosely. A hunch is not proof.

NOW, THE ACTUAL TELLS

The clearest one is emptiness.
You: "The matatu was late, so I walked to Kencom and beat it there anyway."
AI: "Transportation delays can occur, and alternative options may prove more efficient."

The second is technically correct and says nothing. No name, no place, nothing you can picture. That hollow, polished feel is the strongest signal there is. Add the words it leans on, "delve, tapestry, seamless, navigate, realm," plus openers like "in today's fast-paced world," and you have a decent hunch. Nothing more.
Because here's the catch: anyone who edits their draft removes every one of these signs in five minutes. The tells only catch lazy use.

SO WHAT ARE WE EVEN DOING

Chasing AI is a losing game. The models improve every month and the tells fade with them.
The skill that lasts isn't catching the machine. It's writing with enough of your own detail and your own nerve that nobody thinks to ask. Be specific. Say what you actually believe. Put a matatu and a real place in it. No machine can fake your life.

Now the harder part: how do you know the answer is TRUE?

Here's what nobody warns you about. AI never sounds unsure. It doesn't stammer. It doesn't say "I think." It hands you a clean, confident, well-organised answer whether it knows or not.

⚠️ WHY WE FALL FOR IT

We're wired to trust things that sound right. Good grammar. Clear structure. A calm tone.

Those signals used to mean someone knew what they were talking about.

They don't mean that anymore.

Fluency is a writing skill. It is NOT a knowledge check.

The AI is very good at the first thing—and has no idea it's failing the second.

🎯 WHERE IT BREAKS

Not everywhere. That's what makes it dangerous. It's right often enough that you stop checking.

Four places the risk actually sits:

NUMBERS AND MATH
It runs the calculation and presents a total with total confidence. Check any figure heading into an invoice, a budget, or a business decision.

SOURCES AND CITATIONS
Ask for references and you'll get real-looking ones. Real journal. Real author. Study that doesn't exist. If you can't click it, don't cite it.

ANYTHING RECENT
Prices, who won, and what changed last month. The model learned from a snapshot of the past. It will still answer as if it read this morning's paper.

ANYTHING LOCAL
This one bites us hardest. KRA procedures, SHA coverage, county fees, and current Nairobi prices. It'll give you a confident answer built from something it half-absorbed years ago about a different country.

⏱️ THE 30-SECOND CHECK

You don't need to verify everything. Just the parts that would cost you something if they were wrong.

Ask yourself: if this were wrong, what would happen?

""Nothing"—move on.

"I lose money, look foolish in front of a client, or make a bad decision"—check it.

Three fast ways:

1. Ask it where the claim comes from, then actually open the link.

2. Google the ONE specific fact the whole answer rests on.

3. Ask the same question again in a fresh chat. Two different answers? It was guessing both times.

🛠️ MAKE IT EASIER TO CHECK

You can prompt for this. Add one of these to the end of your request:

"Tell me which parts of this you're least sure about."

"Separate what you know from what you're estimating."

"If you don't know, say so instead of guessing."

It won't make it perfect. It will make the soft spots visible — and that's most of the battle.

🔑 THE PART THAT ACTUALLY MATTERS

Here's the correction: a better prompt gets you a better-SOUNDING answer.

Sounding better and being right are two different things, and the gap between them is where people get hurt.

So here's the rule I'd tattoo on this page:

The answer that sounds most convincing is the one you should check first.

Not because it's more likely to be wrong. Because if it is wrong, you're the least likely to notice.

Here's the secret nobody tells you: it's not the tool. It's how you talk to it.

THE PROBLEM
Most people type one lazy sentence and expect magic.
"Write me a resignation letter." "Help me plan a trip." "Explain inflation."
The AI answers. But it's generic. Vague. Could apply to anyone.
That's not the AI being dumb. That's you giving it nothing to work with.

THE FIX: TREAT IT LIKE A NEW EMPLOYEE, NOT A GOOGLE SEARCH
A new employee can't read your mind. They need context, specifics, and a clear idea of what "done" looks like. AI is the same.

BEFORE vs AFTER
❌ "Write me a resignation letter."
✅ "Short, professional resignation letter. Marketing coordinator, leaving after 2 years, on good terms, 3 weeks' notice. Warm but not overly emotional."
❌ "Help me plan a trip."
✅ "5-day trip to Mombasa in August, moderate budget. We like beaches, good food, and one or two cultural activities—no malls. Give me a day-by-day plan."
❌ "Explain inflation."
✅ "Explain inflation like I'm a small business owner deciding whether to raise my prices this year. Under 200 words, no jargon."
Same question. Completely different answer.

4 THINGS TO ALWAYS INCLUDE
1️⃣ Context — who you are, or your situation
2️⃣ Specifics — numbers, names, dates, constraints
3️⃣ Format — list? paragraph? word limit? say so
4️⃣ Tone — formal, casual, funny? tell it

BONUS: DO YOU NEED TO GIVE IT A ROLE?
Not always. But sometimes it changes everything.
Give it a role ("Act as a career coach" or "You're a strict editor") when you want specific expertise or voice—not just information, but a lens. If you're asking for advice, feedback, or something creative, a role sharpens the answer.
Skip it when your prompt already has strong context. If you say "explain inflation like I'm a small business owner deciding whether to raise my prices," you've basically already given it a role—no need to spell it out twice.
Quick test: does how it answers matter as much as what it says? If yes, add a role. If the content alone is well-specified, skip it.

ONE MORE TRICK
Talk to it like a conversation, not a search bar. If the first answer isn't right, don't start over:
"Make it shorter." "Too formal, make it casual." "Add a joke at the start."
Refining beats retyping.

THE REAL SECRET
The best AI users don't have the fanciest tool. They just explain themselves clearly.

Most people open it, type one lazy question, get an okay answer, and never go back. They're using a sports car to drive to the mailbox.

So let's fix that. Here are 5 things you can actually copy-paste in today—simply.

📧 1. THE CONFUSING EMAIL FIX

Got an email from your bank, your lawyer, or HR that sounds like a different language?

Paste it in. Say: "Explain this to me like I'm 12, and tell me if I need to do anything."

You'll understand it in 10 seconds. No more re-reading the same paragraph five times.
