Pastor James Irungu breaks Truphena Muthoniās 72-hour tree-hugging record
He Collapses in Tree Hugging Marathonand rushed to Hospital.
Murangāa pastor Jimmy Irungu collapsed on Thursday morning just minutes shy of completing an ambitious 80-hour tree-hugging challenge aimed at raising cancer awareness.
The 30-year-old clergyman had endured 79 hours and 40 minutes when he fainted from exhaustion and was rushed to Murangāa County Level Five Hospital. The campaign began on Sunday, January 4, 2026, and was drawing to a close when the incident occurred.
Medical officials later confirmed that Irungu was in stable condition, explaining that his collapse was caused by extreme fatigue resulting from prolonged physical exertion.
Murangāa County Executive Committee Member for Youth Affairs, Noah Gachucha, said doctors found all the pastorās vital organs functioning normally and noted that he was expected to be discharged a few hours later.
Although he fell short of the 80-hour goal, Irunguās endurance surpassed the previous 72-hour record set by environmental activist and Kenyaās 15 Billion Tree Planting Campaign ambassador, Truphena Muthoni, effectively setting a new benchmark.
The marathon tree-hugging event, held in Murangāa town, attracted growing crowds as residents and visitors gathered over several days to witness the rare feat.
When Irungu crossed the 72-hour mark, the atmosphere turned celebratory, with supporters breaking into song, dance, and prayer in recognition of the milestone.
The campaign gained national attention, drawing leaders, influencers, and supporters from neighboring counties. Muthoni also paid a visit to the site, where she commended Irunguās determination and endorsed the cause he was championing.
Irungu said his motivation stemmed from the suffering of cancer patients within his church and community, describing cancer as a quiet but devastating crisis.
Gachucha hailed the pastorās effort as a historic achievement, noting that nothing of its kind had been attempted in Murangāa or beyond, and praised him as a source of pride for the county.
Governor Irungu Kangāata later announced that the county government would engage the pastor after his recovery to discuss ways of enhancing cancer awareness programs.
