The white smoke has risen. The bells of St. Peterβs Basilica have rung. And the world has heard the ancient, powerful words once again: Habemus Papam! We have a Pope.
Today, the College of Cardinals elected Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as the 267th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. Upon his election, he chose the name Pope Leo XIV, becoming the first to take the name Leo in over a centuryβsince the passing of Pope Leo XIII in 1903.
A native of Chicago, USA, Pope Leo XIV brings to the papacy a rich blend of pastoral experience, global perspective, and deep commitment to the teachings of the Church. Before his elevation, he served as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and had previously worked extensively in Latin America, ministering to the poor and guiding the faithful with humility and wisdom.
His choice of the name Leo is both historic and symbolic. The original Pope Leo I, known as Leo the Great, courageously defended the faith in the 5th century and stood firm during times of doctrinal crisis. Pope Leo XIII, one of his most famous successors, is remembered for his groundbreaking social encyclical Rerum Novarum, which addressed workersβ rights and set the foundation for Catholic social teachings.
By choosing the name Leo XIV, the new Pope signals a desire to draw from this legacyβstrengthening the Churchβs voice in the modern world, defending truth with charity, and walking closely with the marginalized.
In his first appearance from the balcony of St. Peterβs Basilica, Pope Leo XIV greeted the faithful with calm joy and a heartwarming smile. His first words as Pope reflected simplicity and grace:
βBrothers and sisters, thank you for your prayers. Let us now begin this journeyβtogether, with Christβtoward a world of peace, justice, and compassion.β
