A regional watchdog just told Kenya how to fix its draft AI policy.

CIPESA — the East and Southern Africa ICT policy network — submitted formal recommendations to Kenya's draft AI and Emerging Technologies Policy, 2026. Core message: right track, not strong enough.

• Make human rights and gender impact assessments mandatory for high-risk AI.
• Strengthen the independence of AI oversight bodies — audit, enforcement, redress.
• Protect AI workers, from data annotators to content moderators.
• Align with regional and international frameworks.

On July 9, PS for ICT Eng. John Tanui hosted a meeting in Nairobi with the U.S. Embassy, ICT Security Director Emmanuel Kata, and Data Protection Commissioner Immaculate Kassait.

The agenda: align Kenya's Draft Data Governance Policy (2026) with international best practices on data protection, cross-border data flows, and bilateral digital cooperation.
