WOOFER REPAIR GUIDE
LESSON 3.1: THE PREAMPLIFIER FILTER
The Preamplifier Filter is a key part of woofer’s sound system. Its main function is to filter the input sound signals, separating them into different frequency ranges before sending them to the amplifier section.
In most woofer designs, one audio channel (commonly Left – L) is filtered to produce Bass (Low frequency) output, while the other channel (commonly Right – R) is filtered to produce Treble/High (High frequency) output.
👉 However, this isn’t a fixed rule — the roles of L and R can be interchanged, depending on the circuit design or manufacturer’s preference.
Here’s how it works practically:
1. Signal Input (L & R):
The sound signal from the MP3 decoder enters the preamplifier through two input lines — Left and Right.
2. Filtering Section:
One channel passes through a Low-Pass Filter, allowing only Bass frequencies to reach the subwoofer amplifier.
The other passes through a High-Pass Filter, letting only Treble and Mid frequencies pass to the satellite speaker amplifier.
The filtering section may use discrete electronic components such as resistors, capacitors, diodes, and transistors to form analog filters.
In modern woofer designs, this section is often built around dedicated preamplifier ICs such as JRC4558, LM358, TL072, NE5532, or LM324, which offer cleaner sound and higher stability.
3. 🔊 Signal Output:
The result is two distinct signal lines — one for Bass and one for Highs/Treble — ready for amplification.
4. Power Supply:
The preamplifier filter operates on low DC voltage, usually between 5V and 15V, depending on the woofer’s design.
Some preamp filter units use a single power supply (positive and ground), while others use a dual/split power supply (positive, negative, and ground).
Dual power designs are common in high-performance systems because they allow the output signal to swing symmetrically around zero volts, improving sound quality and reducing distortion.
5. Tone Control:
Tone, volume, and gain are adjusted either digitally (via MP3 decoder buttons) or analog (via potentiometers). Analog tone controls allow manual variation of Bass, Treble, and Master Volume for custom sound shaping.
🎯 The preamplifier filter defines the woofer’s sound character — bringing out the deep bass and clear highs that make music come alive.
