Fifteen people have applied to the Kenyan node for GKHack26. The target was fifty.
We're publishing the ratio rather than the ambition, because a record that only contains good numbers isn't a record.
The gap has three causes and none of them are mysterious. Kenyan universities have been between semesters for most of the mobilisation window. The list is an expression of interest, not a registration — Geekulcha's Sonke platform hasn't opened its Kenyan window yet. And there was no Kenyan node last year, so fifteen isn't a decline from anything. It's a first count.
What's on the list matters more than how long it is. Nine of the fifteen from one university. Ten in agriculture. Five arriving with work already underway. Nine marked "looking for a team", which is most of what tomorrow's onboarding hour is for.
One track — aerial mapping — has exactly one registrant, and it's the node coordinator. If you fly anything over land in western Kenya, that track is empty and it's yours.
The list closes tomorrow, 11 September. Onboarding runs at 16:00 EAT.
Three clocks: 11 September, seventy-two hours, ninety days. The third is the only one that decides anything, and it starts after everyone has gone home. Most hackathons end with a cheque and a photograph. This node is trying to end with a deployment — a named institution, an operator, and a system still running on day 91.
