World Lake Day is on August 27 🏞️

Did you know this global celebration actually began at Lake Biwa?
It traces back to the 1st World Lake Conference, held in Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture on August 27, 1984, and was officially established by the UN General Assembly in December 2024.

Lake Biwa is Japan's largest lake, covering about 670 km², home to a rich ecosystem with over 60 endemic species.

At Horizon, our Biwako Factory (Takashima City, Shiga) is also committed to protecting Lake Biwa.

🌾 Shoreline cleanups: collecting around 100kg of waste every year
🌾 Reed bed conservation: participating in cutting, clearing, and controlled burning of reed beds, which provide habitat for fish and waterfowl and help purify the water
💧 Cleaner manufacturing: We carefully treat wastewater from our manufacturing processes before release, helping protect Lake Biwa and the surrounding environment. Yes, you heard us right, we want to take a closer look at conveyors and how they are moving smart-factory development in the finishing industry.

While this technology has been around for a while and is often overlooked, conveyors are essential for smart factory automation by transporting paper, bookblocks, or books from one stage of production to the next. Having different production processes integrated together inline allows more efficient production as the overall workflow is more streamlined with less operator touchpoints. 🦾

End-to-End Production at Horizon Smart Factory! 💡

The AGV-Assisted Smart Binding System from HSF 2024 took us one step closer towards Lights Out automation by integrating a wide variety of smart factory technology like robotic arms for book block feeding, AGV and AMR for streamlined logistics, an inline cut sheet printer, and workflow automation to accomplish end-to-end production.

Combining two perfect binders inline with one trimmer, this system gives you two labor saving and automated solutions in one for less touchpoints, less costs, and more productivity.

This system is in collaboration with Marketing Japan. Inc. and KAGAKU. We look forward to welcoming them both back as partners to Horizon Smart Factory 2026.
