What is WAGASHI?
Wagashi is Japanese traditional sweets. People enjoys specific Wagashi at some events. The design is normally from four seasons and it is used seasonal materials as well. It means Japanese traditionally loves seasonal / limited edition for the foods!!
Wagashi is made since A.D.700 - 900. It is made for long-term storage such as rice cake and dumplings. After 1200, those sweets starts spreading with trading with China, and be famous with Sado (Japanese style tea party), however, it was not as sweet as what we imagine. After 1600, the trading with European countries gave some hints of sweets, and Wagashi had rapidly improved. Therefore, those Wagashi we eat nowadays are born around Edo era.
Wagashi is reflected Japanese beautiful seasons. Sakura (cherry blossoms) in spring, Kanten jelly in summer, sweet potato in autumn, and plum in winter…. All Wagashi are designed to seasonal image.
