I’ve had the opportunity to become pretty good friends with this guitar in the time CroyTone has existed in Sapporo. From cleaning up a headstock break, to quickly coming up with a fix for a broken saddle before a show, to setting it up several times while doing a bit of guitar tech work for NOT WONK

This week it came in with the usual aging pains of a 30-year-old, very well-used guitar. The nut was buzzing and the frets were getting pretty worn. I got to give it a new bone nut, along with a good fret level, recrown, and polish. After a full setup, it’s as good as ever—and I’ll tell you, this guitar is GOOD.

There’s just something about ’90s Historic Gibsons, before they got all reissue/Custom Shop crazy. This one feels better than almost any modern Gibson I’ve played and absolutely rings like a bell.

It’s also been a lot of fun becoming friends with Shuhei Kato and the guys in Not Wonk. I’ve fixed up guitars, basses, amps, and pedals, helped pick up vintage Ludwig drum kits from the airport, and even recorded a pedal steel part for their last single. It’s been a great time.

Go out and find yourself a ’90s Gibson. They’re great.

And find one for me while you’re at it.

CroyToneを札幌で始めてから、このギターとはかなり長い付き合いになりました。

ヘッド折れの修理をしたり、ライブ直前に壊れたサドルを急いで直したり、 のギターテックを少しやった時には何度かセットアップもしました。

今週は、30年くらいたくさん弾かれてきたギターらしいメンテナンスで入ってきました。ナットからビビりが出ていて、フレットもかなり減っていました。

今回は新しい牛骨ナットを作って、フレットのすり合わせ、リクラウン、ポリッシュをして、最後にしっかりセットアップ。

また最高の状態になりました。

そして、このギター、本当に良いです。

90年代のGibson Historicには、今のReissueやCustom Shopとはちょっと違う何かがある気がします。このギターは、今まで弾いた最近のGibsonのほとんどより自分には良く感じるし、生鳴りも本当にすごいです。

やNot Wonkのみんなと仲良くなれたのも本当に楽しいです。今までギター、ベース、アンプ、ペダルを修理したり、空港までヴィンテージのLudwigのドラムセットを取りに行くのを手伝ったり、前回のシングルではペダルスティールも録音しました。

いろいろ関われて、本当に楽しい時間です。

みんなも90年代のGibsonを探してみてください。良いですよ。

A true acoustic classic has arrived at CroyTone Audio. This 1999 Martin D-28 delivers everything players love about a mature Martin dreadnought: powerful bass, balanced mids, sparkling highs, and the open, resonant voice that only decades of aging can produce. This guitar is in good overall condition with honest signs of use, including picking scratches above the soundhole and light finish checking throughout the body. These cosmetic marks are part of its history and do not affect its excellent playability or tone. Features include a solid Sitka spruce top, solid East Indian rosewood back and sides, ebony fingerboard and bridge, and the original hard case. Now available at CroyTone Audio.

A recent Mesa/Boogie restoration project from the bench.

This Mesa/Boogie Son of Boogie arrived after spending many years in storage. The owner reported excessive noise and loud popping during operation and wanted the amplifier returned to reliable playing condition.

Upon inspection, one of the main power supply filter capacitors had suffered a broken lead, preventing the power supply from filtering properly. Further examination revealed that all five of the original filter capacitors had reached the end of their service life.

A complete set of new filter capacitors was installed, the controls were cleaned and lubricated, and the amplifier was thoroughly inspected and tested.

With a rebuilt power supply and preventative maintenance completed, the Son of Boogie is once again operating quietly and reliably and is ready for many more years of service.

最近ベンチで行ったMesa/Boogie Son of Boogieのレストア事例をご紹介します。

このアンプは長期間保管された後に使用されたもので、大きなノイズやポップノイズが発生するという症状で入庫しました。オーナー様からは、本来の状態へ戻して安心して使えるようにしてほしいとのご依頼をいただきました。

点検を行ったところ、主電源回路のフィルターコンデンサのひとつで接続リードが破損しており、電源回路が正常に動作していないことが判明しました。

さらに調査を進めると、電源部のフィルターコンデンサ5本すべてが製造当時のままであり、交換時期を大幅に超えていました。

すべての電源フィルターコンデンサを交換し、コントロールの洗浄と潤滑作業、各部の点検を実施しました。

修理完了後はノイズやポップノイズも解消され、Son of Boogie本来の性能を取り戻しました。

One of the more interesting synthesizer repairs to hit the bench recently.

This Moog Matriarch came in with a strange fault. Every time it was powered on, it would continuously reboot and produce a loud pop through the outputs.

Initial testing revealed the synthesizer was attempting to draw nearly 3.5A at startup, far beyond the rating of its original power supply.

After tracing the fault through the power distribution circuitry, the problem was narrowed down to a failed SMD capacitor on the +10V power rail. The faulty component was causing excessive current draw, pulling the rail voltage down and preventing the synthesizer from booting properly.

Once replaced, the Matriarch returned to normal operation and passed full functional testing.

最近ベンチに入庫した中でも特に興味深かった修理事例をご紹介します。

今回のMoog Matriarchは、電源投入後に再起動を繰り返し、そのたびに出力から大きなポップノイズが発生するという症状で入庫しました。

測定を行ったところ、起動時に約3.5Aもの電流を消費していることが判明しました。これは純正電源アダプターの定格を大きく超える値です。

故障箇所を追跡した結果、+10V電源ライン上のSMDコンデンサが故障しており、異常な電流消費によって電源電圧が低下し、正常に起動できなくなっていました。

故障部品を交換した後は正常に起動するようになり、すべての機能が問題なく動作することを確認しました。

Today on the bench was a Marshall JVM410H.

This amp came in after the customer installed a fresh matched quartet of EL34 power tubes and needed a proper bias adjustment. The customer also mentioned some unwanted noise, so I performed a full inspection and service.

The JVM410H is an incredibly versatile tube amplifier with 4 channels, 12 different modes, dual master volumes, and two effects loops. All that flexibility also means a lot of controls that can develop noise over time.

After testing the amp on the bench, I found several noisy pots and switches. The control boards were removed to properly clean and lubricate all 28 front panel potentiometers before setting the correct bias for the new power tubes.

After servicing, the amp was quiet, properly biased, and ready to get back to work!

今回はMarshall JVM410Hのメンテナンス作業でした。

お客様が新品のマッチドクアッドEL34出力管に交換されたため、新しい真空管に合わせたバイアス調整をご依頼いただきました。また、アンプからのノイズについても点検しました。

JVM410Hは4チャンネル、12種類のモード、2系統のマスターボリュームやエフェクトループを搭載した非常に多機能な真空管アンプです。その分、経年によってノイズが発生する可能性のあるコントロールも多くあります。

点検の結果、いくつかのポットやスイッチにガリノイズが発生していたため、コントロール基板を取り外し、フロントパネルにある28個のポットをすべて清掃・メンテナンスしました。

最後に新しい出力管に合わせてバイアス調整を行い、正常な状態に復旧しました。

The new site is a visual refresh of the old one, but more importantly, I’ve streamlined the repair inquiry process and added much more information about the repair and restoration services I offer here in Sapporo.

I’ve also launched a new Bench Journal section where I’ll be posting detailed repair case studies, restoration projects, and technical articles. If you’ve ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes during a repair, or if you’d like to see how your own equipment was repaired, you’ll be able to find much more detailed information there.

I’ll also be sharing occasional technical notes, restoration projects, and other interesting shop updates along the way.

Feel free to take a look around the new site, browse the Bench Journal, and try out the new repair inquiry form if you have equipment in need of repair or restoration.

Today on the bench was a Vox AC15CC1.

These are great sounding and affordable versions of the classic Vox amplifier. This model uses a solid-state rectifier made up of two diodes rather than a rectifier tube.

The customer brought the amp in because it was repeatedly blowing fuses. After troubleshooting the circuit, I traced the fault to the rectifier diodes. A fresh set of diodes solved the issue and the amp is now back up and running.

Always satisfying to bring another amplifier back to life.

今日の修理は Vox AC15CC1 でした。

このモデルは、クラシックなVoxサウンドを比較的手頃な価格で楽しめる人気のアンプです。整流回路には真空管ではなく、2本のダイオードを使用したソリッドステート整流方式が採用されています。

お客様から「ヒューズが切れてしまう」という症状でお預かりし、点検を進めたところ、原因は整流用ダイオードの故障でした。

新品のダイオードに交換したところ正常動作を確認し、無事に復旧しました。

また1台、現役復帰です。

Finished up another keyboard repair today. This Yamaha XS6 came in with intermittent buttons, scratchy faders, and a few unreliable keys.

I fully disassembled the keyboard, cleaned and lubricated all controls to resolve the issues with the buttons and faders.

Keyboards from this era use rubber contact strips that control both key activation and velocity response. Over time, the conductive rubber wears out, and there’s no reliable way to restore it. In fact, contact cleaner often makes things worse.

A new set of key contact strips was ordered from the US and installed, bringing this 20-year-old keyboard back to proper working condition.

本日もキーボード修理を完了しました。こちらのYamaha XS6は、ボタンの接触不良やフェーダーのガリ、いくつかの鍵盤の反応不良がある状態で入荷しました。

キーボードを分解し、すべてのコントロールを洗浄・潤滑することで、ボタンやフェーダーの不具合を改善しました。

この年代のキーボードは、鍵盤の発音とベロシティ（強弱）を制御するラバーコンタクトを使用していますが、導電ゴムは経年劣化で摩耗してしまい、確実に復活させる方法はほとんどありません。接点復活剤も逆効果になることが多いです。

今回はアメリカから新品のコンタクトストリップを取り寄せて交換し、約20年前のキーボードを本来の動作状態へと復元しました。

1988 Gibson Les Paul Jr in Cherry Red just landed in the shop.

This one is a true player—lots of wear, dents, and character, exactly how a great Jr should be. It’s been fully serviced with a fret level, crown, and polish, and it plays incredibly well.

It features a handmade ebony pickguard (original included) and upgraded Grover mini tuners for solid tuning stability.

There was a headstock repair done long ago, professionally handled and now completely stable.

Looks cool, plays great, and sounds exactly like you want a Les Paul Jr to sound.

1988年製 Gibson Les Paul Jr（チェリーレッド）が入荷しました。

キズや打痕など使用感のあるプレイヤーズコンディションですが、それがこのギターの魅力でもあります。フレットはすり合わせ・再クラウン・ポリッシュ済みで、非常に弾きやすい状態です。

現在はハンドメイドのエボニーピックガードを装着（オリジナルも付属）。ペグはGroverミニロトマチックに交換済みで、チューニングも安定しています。

過去にヘッド折れの修理歴がありますが、プロによる修理で現在はしっかり安定しています。

見た目もサウンドも雰囲気抜群の1本です。
