Domain Rating is one of the most watched SEO metrics, but it is often misunderstood.
Ahrefs explains that there is no single number that makes a DR “good.” A score only becomes useful when it is compared against the right benchmark.
For businesses, that means looking at three areas:
🔵 Direct competitors you fight for the same customers
🔵 Industry averages that show what normal looks like in your market
🔵 The DR of websites already ranking for the keywords you want
That last point matters.
A lower-DR site can still rank when the keyword is less competitive, the content is useful, and the page matches the search intent. A higher DR can help, but it does not guarantee visibility.
The better way to use DR is as a planning tool.
It can help you see how competitive a market is, where link building may be needed, and which keywords are realistic targets right now.
