The Hi-Fi Hall of Fame is celebrating the birthday of Nelson Pass, born on June 27, 1951.
Nelson Pass is a highly influential figure in the history of high fidelity audio amplification. Over a career spanning more than five decades, he has fundamentally shaped the landscape of solid-state amplifier design, blending rigorous engineering with an artistic devotion to musicality.
After graduating from the University of California, Davis, with a degree in physics, Pass co-founded Threshold Corporation in 1974. There, he revolutionized high end audio with his patented “Stasis” circuit, a design that achieved remarkable linearity. The Stasis amplifiers became legendary, even catching the attention of Nakamichi, who licensed the technology for their own flagship components.
Later, Pass founded Pass Labs, a venture that allowed him to explore his true electronic passion: simplicity. He became a champion of Class A circuitry, particularly single ended topologies. His famous Aleph series, featuring the patented Supersymmetry circuit, proved that solid state electronics could deliver the warmth, texture, and holographic imaging traditionally associated with vacuum tubes, without sacrificing power and reliability.
Beyond his commercial success, Pass is well known for his unparalleled generosity toward the do-it-yourself audio community. Through First Watt, a creative sandbox focused on low-power, minimalist amplifiers, and his active participation on platforms like diyAudio.com, he has freely shared schematics, design philosophies, and custom transistors. He routinely encourages hobbyists to build, modify, and understand his work, believing that the joy of audio should be accessible to all.
Today, Nelson Pass remains an influential figure in the audiophile world. His legacy is defined not just by the legendary components bearing his name, but by a lifelong commitment to the pursuit of sonic purity.
