ROSIE VELA / Zazu (1986 US)

元モデルのRosie Velaが1986年にリリースしたデビュー・アルバムで彼女の唯一のアルバム。
デザイナーやディレクターのクレジットはないが、元モデルということで、ファッション写真のように、美意識やスタイルを重視している。ウィーブのかかった髪や肌の色のコントラストが美しいモノクロポートレートである。アーティスト名とタイトルは上部左右に控えめに配置してある。ジャケット裏右列の曲クレジットの文字と歌詞カードの表1-4は淡いピンク色で白黒のジャケットアートワークとの組み合わせで女性らしさを演出している。歌詞が掲載されているライナーノーツはA4判とB5判の間のサイズ。LPのライナーノーツと言えばLPジャケットとほぼ同じサイズが一般的だが、個人的にはこれくらいのサイズがユーザーにとっては読みやすい。
STEELY DANのファンだったという彼女。Donald Fagenがほぼ全曲でシンセサイザーを演奏し、数曲でWalter Beckerがギターを弾き、プロデュースはGary Katzである。全曲の作詞作曲はRosie自身だが、アルトヴォイスにミドルテンポの曲調は所謂AORに分類される音楽でSTEELY DANの影響を感じられる。
2001年に発売されたELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRAの復活作「Zoom」。ここでコーラスとして久々にRosie Velaの名前を発見した。そしてその後行われ、DVDとして発売された「Zoom Tour Live」にRosieも参加していた。このライヴでのRosieを見ると、アルバム発売から15年経っているにもかかわらず、ジャケット写真よりもずいぶん幼く見えた。そしてこの前後7年にわたってJeff Lynneと付き合っていたことも知った。

Rosie Vela’s debut album, released in 1986, is her only album.
Though no designer or director is credited, the cover feels like a fashion photograph, emphasizing style and visual elegance. The black-and-white portrait is striking, with beautiful contrast between her waved hair and skin tone. The artist name and title are placed discreetly at the top left and right. Pale pink text on the back cover and lyric sheet adds a feminine touch to the monochrome artwork. The lyric booklet is a readable size, smaller than a typical LP insert, which I personally find easier to read.
A fan of Steely Dan, Rosie had Donald Fagen play synthesizer on most tracks, Walter Becker on guitar for several songs, and Gary Katz as producer. Rosie wrote all the songs herself, but the mid-tempo arrangements and repeated key changes clearly reflect Steely Dan’s influence.
In 2001, I found Rosie’s name again as a chorus member on ELO’s comeback album Zoom. She also joined the later Zoom Tour Live DVD performance. Watching her there, I was surprised to see that she looked much younger than she did in the album cover photo, even 15 years later.
