LISTENING SESSION — THE GYUTO MONKS RECORDINGS
October 2nd, 8 PM — Studio 33, Trastevere
Spazio Supernova meets Studio 33 for a listening session dedicated to recordings of the Gyuto Monks’ “ocean-rolling voice.”
Renowned worldwide for their extraordinary technique of multiphonic chanting, the Gyuto Monks belong to the Gelug, or “Yellow Hat,” school, founded in Tibet in 1474. They have lived in exile in Sidhbari, near Dharamsala, India, since the Chinese occupation of 1959.
The choir’s most striking feature is each monk’s ability to produce several notes simultaneously — a deep fundamental tone combined with two or three higher overtones.
Far from being an artistic performance for its own sake, this is a powerful ta***ic meditative practice: the sub-bass vibrations and overtones are meant to attune the mind to the frequencies of the deities and generate universal peace.
The evening is part of Khandroma, born from the collaboration between Soundwalk Collective and This is Patti Smith , presented as an audio-visual installation at Spazio Supernova.
