JOHN ATKINSON RETIRES

Can standard measurements trick even the most experienced ears?

John Atkinson's retirement from Stereophile marks the end of an era. Over the years, his benches have tested everything. However, innovative, non-traditional engineering—like our discrete R2R Ladder DACs with no digital reconstruction filter—has often challenged traditional measurement protocols, sometimes leading to tech preconceptions or misleading data points before the music even starts.

Yet, when John stepped away from his test bench and actually listened through his own ears in this Binaural Video Report, the sheer musical truth broke through.

He was evaluating an absolute state-of-the-art system featuring our La Diva transport and Formula xHD DAC as the digital front end (2:51), perfectly paired with the magnificent LAMM Industries preamp and amplifiers, the exquisite KHARMA loudspeakers (4:11), and Tchernov Cable wiring (4:31). Faced with this synergy, he couldn't deny the "extreme tangibility" and full-range weight of the sound (5:11). Real life outperformed the graphs.

The Purest Path to High-Resolution Audio
Qobuz Connect allows users to stream their favorite music directly from the native Qobuz app (iOS, Android, Windows, and MacOS) to the Aqua LinQ. By establishing a direct link between Qobuz’s servers and the hardware, it ensures a bit-perfect transmission in High-Resolution up to 24-bit/192 kHz.

Engineered for "Acoustic Quality"
In keeping with Aqua’s philosophy, the Qobuz Connect module was developed in-house to meet the most rigorous "Acoustic Quality" standards. Rather than using off-the-shelf solutions, Aqua has engineered a dedicated hardware board for the LinQ’s modular slots, featuring purpose-optimized electronics:
• Ultra-Low Latency: 32-bit Programmable Real-Time Units (PRU) running a specialized, audiophile-grade kernel.
• Zero Jitter Architecture: Dual high-precision clock oscillators and digital logic based on a modern FPGA.
• Pure Power: Dedicated voltage regulators to eliminate any potential interference or electrical noise.
• Galvanic Isolation: The internal LinQ LAN Switch (custom-developed by Aqua) feeds the module, while digital outputs are galvanically isolated via signal transformers.
