National Engineers Day:

In India, Engineers Day is celebrated on 15th September every year to pay tribute to Sir Mokshagundam Viswesvaraya (also known as Sir MV). Sir MV is one of India’s first civil engineers, who was also awarded a Bharat Ratna in 1955. National Engineers Day is a day to honor the work of Sir MV and acknowledge other engineers as well.

Engineers Day is an occasion to spread awareness about the importance of civil engineering and to remember the contribution of countless civil engineers in nation-building. We have shared more details about this day, its history, significance, and theme below.

National Engineers Day 2023
Indians celebrate National Engineers Day annually on 15th September. This day is officially recognized and celebrated around the country with much enthusiasm. This day offers recognition to all the civil engineers of the country for their efforts. National Engineers Day was first celebrated in 1968 in India.

Engineers Day celebrates one of the country’s first civil engineers, Sir MV, who won the Bharat Ratna award in 1955 for his contribution. Here, we have shared a brief overview of the day:

National Engineers Day 2023 Theme
Engineers Day is celebrated every year to honor the efforts of all engineers. This day is celebrated around a unique theme each year. The Engineers Day 2023 theme has not been announced yet. The previous year’s theme has been discussed below in detail.

Engineers Day 2022 theme was “Engineering for A Healthy Planet – Celebrating the UNESCO Engineering Report.” Engineering plays a huge role in designing and innovating machines, devices, structures, and digital systems that everybody uses today. This theme recognizes the effort of the field to contribute to society.

Engineers Day in India
The nation observes Engineers Day each year on 15th September. This day is celebrated to commemorate the achievements of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya (Sir MV) on his birth anniversary. Sir MV was a civil engineer, statesman, and administrator. He was made the Diwan of Mysore from 1912 to 1918.

National Engineers day is also celebrated to acknowledge and appreciate the many contributions of all the engineers in the country. Other countries like Tanzania and South Africa also celebrate Engineers Day on 15th September.

About Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya:
He was born and raised in Karnataka and completed his postgraduation in Arts from the University of Mysore.
He pursued Engineering at the College of Science in Pune.
Sir MV is also known as the “Father of Modern Mysore”.
Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya took up several complex engineering projects and became one of the most well-regarded engineers in India.
Since his projects were immensely successful, he was sent to Yemen to study drainage and water supply systems by the Government of India.
Sir MV’s birthday is celebrated as National Engineers Day in India.
National Engineers Day: History
Engineers Day is celebrated in different parts of the world on different days. In India, this day is celebrated on 15th September every year. The history of National Engineers Day can be traced back to 1968, when it was first celebrated on Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya’s birth anniversary. Since then, the day has been celebrated every year.

Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya passed away in 1962, but left a rich legacy of developing innovative engineering technology behind. Here are some of the historical contributions of Sir MV that are remembered on National Engineers Day.

Engineers Day: Contributions of Sir MV:
Sir MV’s engineering and irrigation techniques were used to manage floods.
In 1903, Sir MV designed and developed automatic floodgates, which were installed at the Khadakwasla reservoir, Pune.
Sometime later, these automatic floodgates were also installed at the Krishnaraja Sagara in Mysuru and the Tigra Dam in Gwalior. Sir MV was the chief engineer in both of these projects.
In 1908, he contributed to controlling the Musi river floods in Hyderabad by developing modern sewage systems.
He contributed to the design of the road that links Tirumala and Tirupati.
In 1917, Sir MV formed the Government Engineering College in Bengaluru, which was later renamed the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering.
He received an Honorary Membership from the London Institution of Civil Engineers.
