Everyone measures the wall. Nobody measures a hanger.

We see the same thing on almost every site in Hyderabad. The wardrobe is priced by the square foot of shutter, the family picks a laminate, and the inside is left to whatever the carpenter has always done. Then you move in, and the shirts sit in the top third with a metre of empty air beneath them.

Here are the numbers we work to, and you are welcome to hold your designer to them.

Depth 600 mm for a hinged wardrobe, 650 mm for sliding because the track takes 60-65 mm. A hanger hangs sideways inside the wardrobe, so its 450 mm width goes into the depth. Anything under 550 and the hanger has to turn, at that point you have a shelf.

Hanging is only ever two heights. 1000 mm of clear height for shirts and folded trousers. 1600 mm for long kurtas, dresses and sarees. Coats and suits need 1400. That is the whole list.

Put two rods in the shirt bay instead of one. The same wall then holds twice the clothes, and it costs the price of one extra rod.

Shelves 350 mm apart, not 500. A taller shelf does not hold more clothes, it holds one taller pile that leans and falls. Keep shelf spans under 900 mm or the board sags in the middle, add a vertical partition rather than a thicker board.

Drawers belong below 1200 mm, because you look down into a drawer and never up. 150 mm for socks, belts and watches, 250 mm for folded clothes, and full-extension channels so the back third is not hidden from you.

Loft: 550 mm clear height, the same 600 mm depth, and no shutter wider than 600 mm or it will sag on its own hinges.

And the one that costs Hyderabad families the most: your slab is roughly 3050 mm. After the false ceiling you have about 2900. Decide that number before the wardrobe is drawn, 100 plinth plus 2250 body plus 550 loft lands exactly on it. Skip the step and you get a 300 mm gap above the loft that collects dust for the life of the flat.

Which one did your wardrobe get wrong, the depth, or the one long rod?

Your electrician will ask how many lights you want. Nobody asks how much light you need. Those are two different questions, and only one of them has an actual answer.

Here it is. The National Building Code already fixes the number for every room:

Living room — 100 to 200 lux
Bedroom — 75 to 150
Kitchen — 300 to 500
Bathroom — 150 to 300
Study — 300 to 500
Dining — 150 to 300
Stairs and passages — 100 to 150

Your kitchen needs three times your bedroom. Very few flats are wired that way. And where you actually work — the kitchen counter, the bathroom mirror, your desk — double it. 500 to 750 lux.

Now the part nobody mentions.

About half the light you pay for never arrives. Walls, ceiling and furniture absorb roughly 40 per cent of it. Dust and ageing LEDs take another 20. The box says 1,200 lumens. Around 580 actually reaches your table.

Which is why so many new homes end up either too dim to read in, or lit like a chemist shop.

The whole calculation fits in one line, and you can do it standing in the room:

Square feet × the room's rate ÷ 90 = the watts you need.

A 12 × 12 bedroom is 144 sq ft. Times 18 is 2,600 lumens. Divided by 90 is 29 watts. That is four small downlights. Not eight.

An 8 × 10 kitchen needs about 62 watts. The two 12-watt downlights most builders fit are less than half of what that counter needs.

Rates for the other rooms: 18 bedroom, 26 living, 40 bath or dining, 68 study, 70 kitchen. Then divide by 90.

One last thing. Do not put all of it on the ceiling. Split it 50 ambient, 30 task, 20 accent, on three separate switches. Same total lumens, a completely different room.

Before you sign off the wiring, ask your contractor for the lux at the kitchen counter — not the number of lights.

Which room in your home is the darkest one? Tell us in the comments and we will work out the number for it.

Planning your interiors in Hyderabad? Send us your floor plan and we will do the lighting maths for every room in it.

A home in Hitect City, where the design starts at the lift.

When we took this project on, the lift lobby was the same builder finish as every other floor. It's the first thing the family and their guests see, so we treated it as part of the home.

The whole wall went into wood-grain laminate, carried onto the main door so there's no visible break. A circular metal artwork sits at the centre, opening into a jaali panel that lets a little light through. A wave-shaped false ceiling with cove lighting runs above it, and the nameplate sits on a fluted panel beside a shoe unit with open shelving below.

Inside, we kept the base palette to three materials and repeated them everywhere: ivory fluted panelling, light wood-grain laminate and a soft mint. That restraint is what lets the character pieces stand out.

The foyer carries a printed floral mural with the family's shloka and a gold lotus set into it, framed by a dark fluted column on one side and a rose-gold mirror on the other. The pooja unit is an arched shutter with a CNC-cut lotus, built over mint drawers and dark glass storage. In the living room, a curved walnut shelf sweeps across the fluted wall, and three lime-plaster panels in walnut beading hold brass wall lights.

The kitchen runs mint acrylic against black granite with a picket-tile backsplash and a roller shutter unit for appliances. The master bedroom has a blue velvet channel headboard and an arched dressing mirror by the window. And the children's room stacks a loft over a lower bed, with drawers built into every step of the staircase and a slide on the way down.
