Cook rice with help from….your Android smartphone!

Want to get more accomplished with your smartphone? Now boost your culinary skills with this smartphone controlled rice cooker from Panasonic. Panasonic SR-SX2 connects wirelessly to your smartphone and lets you control and program the cooker according to your convenience. Needless to say, it comes with its own Android app.

You must be wondering how this would work. Well, it depends on the RFID card system that has been developed by Sony. The really useful thing though is that you can actually determine what kind of rice you want to cook using it.

Another thing to keep in mind in case you are really interested in this device is that your smartphone needs to be Feli-ca enabled. It is kind of similar to NFC, but developed by Sony. The cooker can stand temperatures up to 200℃. Panasonic has also put in a cloud service where you can share recipes.

The sad news though is that it is intended only for Japanese users right now and the price - $1075 (Rs. 53,750). Still, the concept sounds quite good and we will be waiting for a time when such innovations become more commonplace.

Innovative ‘BluFi’ technology launched at Bangalore City Railway Station

A new and innovative technology called BluFi has been launched in Bangalore services at the City Railway station. It is a unique combination of Bluetooth application and Wi-Fi connectivity which will allow passengers to receive a host of information, like videos, downloadable games, wallpapers etc and also Railway information so on by just switching on Bluetooth on their mobile phones. The initiative has been taken by Bangalore Division in collaboration with RailTel and Telibrahma.

There is also free Wi-Fi connectivity which has been provided by RailTel as a part of their RailWire retail broadband initiative.

To use the connection passengers can send the request for internet access by sending their mobile number to which the password will be sent on SMS.

India has a very low population of internet users and initiatives like this should be taken in almost every Metro city of India to encourage the availability of internet in public places. Don’t you think so?

Windows 8 Tricks, Tips and Shortcuts

Keyboard shortcuts
Windows 8 is very hotkey-heavy, here are some of the shortcuts I find most useful:

Win + D Standard Windows desktop. Also minimizes/restores all open windows in desktop mode.
Win + Q Shows all installed apps.
Win + W Instant search for settings.
Win + F Instant search for files.
Win + I Settings sidebar (control panel, network, volume, brightness, notifications, and more).

Win + X Power user shortcut menu (Device Manager, Control Panel, Command Prompt, Power Options, etc.).
Win + Z Shows App Bar in Metro applications.
Win + . (period) Snaps the current Metro app to the right side of the screen. Do it twice and it will snap to the left.
Win + . (period) + Shift Snaps the current Metro app to the left side of the screen.
Win + J Switches focus between snapped Metro apps.
Win + Page Up / Down Moves full-screen Metro app to secondary monitor.
Win + Left / Right arrow Moves and snaps desktop applications in that direction, or to a different monitor.

Hot corners
The Start menu is no longer there, but there's a hot corner that makes up for it (unfortunately on multiple screens it's somewhat of a pain to use).

Lower-left corner + Left click Goes to the Start screen (Metro).
Lower-left corner + Right click Power user shortcut menu (Device Manager, Control Panel, Command Prompt, Power Options, etc.).
Upper-left corner Shows open window thumbnails, click to switch between them.
Upper screen limit + Click & Drag on desktop Move to left or right to snap the current desktop or Metro app to one side of the screen.
Lower-right corner Windows 8 Charm menu or Windows Aero Peak.
Upper-right corner Shows Windows 8 charm menu.

Windows 8 Tricks, Tips and Shortcuts

Windows 8 Consumer Preview cracked 1 million downloads shortly after launching last Wednesday and I'm sure many of you have tried it already. Whether you went with a dual-boot, upgrade, clean install or virtual machine, if you're coming from Windows 7 you'll notice significant changes immediately, while others may not be as obvious.

Inevitably, with change comes good and bad -- at least until you learn some tricks that get you back up to speed. I know I've been hitting my head against the wall when things don't behave the way they used to. The Start menu's absence is a perfect example of a radical change. Indeed, the duality of the OS may bring some trouble, but as skeptical as I was, I must admit Microsoft has done a pretty good job of easing many of my concerns.

Metro is undoubtedly very touch-oriented and perhaps a beginner's dream come true. For experienced users, it seems like Windows 8 still holds some promise. The devil is in the details, they say, so besides experimenting with a clean install I tried the upgrade option to see how well it worked. Going from a year-old Windows 7 install to the Consumer Preview was as seamless as you could ask for.

Opera Mobile 12 updated with bug Fixes

Last month at Mobile World Congress Opera released an update to the Opera Mobile and graduated it to version 12. The Opera Mobile 12 Build 2143 had loads of bugs which many users faced.

But today Opera has released an update to the Opera Mobile 12 which will resolve a few bugs.

With the Opera Mobile 12 Build 2169, has fixed the following issues:

Fixed bug with web forms auto-submission
Fixed HTML5 audio/video tags support (now we score 319 + 9 bonus points on http://html5test.com)
Improved performance of zooming animations and general responsiveness during page loading
Fixed a number of startup/shutdown crashes
Changes for font size in opera:config can now be saved (the rest works already)
Even after this update there are a few more issues that remain unresolved but Opera is aware of them and is working on them. The known issues include:
RTL is not fully supported in input fields
Keypad navigation issues on touch devices with QWERTY keyboard
Using FontZoomer to render your fonts can crash under certain circumstances. This is also an issue with the Nokia browser when visiting Hindi sites. We are communicating with them and hopefully it will be fixed on their end.

Google Glasses With Virtual And Augmented Reality

Google plans to release smart glasses that will give help users see where they are and where they need to go.
As per many reports, Google is expected to start selling eyeglasses that will project information, entertainment and, this being a Google product, advertisements onto the lenses. These glasses will have the combined features of virtual reality and augmented reality.

The Google Glasses can use a 4G cell connection to pull in information from Google’s mountain of data and display info about the real world in augmented reality on the lens in front of your eye. As you turn your head you’ll get information about your surroundings and nearby objects from Google Goggles, info on buildings and establishments from Google Maps, even your friends’ nearby check-ins from Latitude. The company has no plans to sell ads into your newly augmented view of the world, but will consider it if the product really catches on.

The glasses are not being designed to be worn constantly — although Google engineers expect some users will wear them a lot — but will be more like smartphones, used when needed, with the lenses serving as a kind of see-through computer monitor.

Google glasses are basically wearable computers, that will use the same Android software that powers Android smartphones and tablets. Like smartphones and tablets, the glasses will be equipped with GPS and motion sensors. They will also contain a camera and audio inputs and outputs.

Several people who have seen the glasses, but who are not allowed to speak publicly about them, said that the location information was a major feature of the glasses. Through the built-in camera on the glasses, Google will be able to stream images to its rack computers and return augmented reality information to the person wearing them. For instance, a person looking at a landmark could see detailed historical information and comments about it left by friends. If facial recognition software becomes accurate enough, the glasses could remind a wearer of when and how he met the vaguely familiar person standing in front of him at a party. They might also be used for virtual reality games that use the real world as the playground.

The expectation is that we will get a really cool demonstration of this technology at Google I/O in June.

Top 5 features of the new iPad

The new iPad has finally been released. It is exciting, it is ultra-cool and like all its predecessors, it has features that no tablet out there has.

But, what excites us most about the iPad. What are the best bits? Trust us to let you know. Here they are:

Retina-display: Without a doubt, a 2048 x 1536 display is an unprecedented development. In short it is beyond Awesome! This feature single handedly outs the new iPad ahead of all other tabs out there.

iSight camera: Firstly, clever play of words with the name. Secondly, the only feature of the previous iPads we used to rant about was their sloppy cameras. Well, not anymore. This 5-megapixel camera at the back of the new iPad makes up for everything with 1080pHD video recording. It has a hybrid infrared camera that is mostly there only in DSLRs.

A5X processor, improved GPU: A leap from the A5, the A5X processor boasts of not only customized high-performance dual-core functionality, there is a quad-core GPU to take care of your retina display.

4G LTE radio, Bluetooth 4.0: Well, Apple has finally jumped on the 4G LTE bandwagon. Sad that we do not have 4G as yet here.

Price: The Ultimate deciding factor. By keeping the price same as the iPad 2, Apple has proved that consumers do matter to it and it will give good quality at a good price.

How about a fiber optic network that gives….512GBPS!

If there is one thing that we can rant in India about, it is slow Internet speeds. The world is so much ahead of us in Internet speeds that we can hardly ever catch up. So, when it comes to Internet speeds what plays a part? Well, lets see.

What plays a part is firstly the machine you are using and the network you are on. But internet is based upon network. It is based upon these large cables are that are laid under the sea. These fiber optic cables play a large part in influencing the speed you should receive.

So, here’s good news. Researchers in Germany are working on a fiber optic network that will guarantee speeds up to, wait for it…512 GBPS.

Yes, 512 GBPS for real. Germany’s Deutsche Telekom has got a working Fiber cable with 512 GBPS capacity. It comes with capacity to provide 400 GBPS on average.

Think of how this could revolutionalize the world. It would affect every segment of our life, whether it be medical, professional or personal. Think of how much content could be viewed online. This will also mark the way for a future that will be mostly virtual i.e. on the internet. Do you want it?

If a single optical fibre guarantees that much speed, it means if you lay them side by side, you will get 24.6 TBPS, whoa. This might just be a life changing news. We hope it reaches us soon. Thanks Gizmodo for this wonderful piece of news.
