I Finally Got Claude Code Running Without Anthropic Spend… And It’s Actually Production-Grade
Everyone keeps posting “Claude Code + Ollama” setups.
I tried them.
They fall apart the second you add real complexity.
So today i spent the day rebuilding the stack properly.
Here’s what I did:
1️⃣ Forked Free Claude Code and built a local Anthropic-compatible proxy
2️⃣ Implemented full `/v1/messages` support (tools, MCP, streaming, long context)
3️⃣ Routed models via NVIDIA NIM + DeepSeek V4 Pro (through `.env` model mapping)
4️⃣ Plugged in MCP servers (filesystem, GitHub, Tavily, n8n)
5️⃣ Built a `.claude/skills` system so Claude Code understands *how I work*
Now here’s the part that surprised me:
This doesn’t feel like “AI coding” anymore.
→ It reads my entire repo and actually understands it
→ Loads CLAUDE.md + project docs without breaking context
→ Applies my custom skills like a trained system, not a prompt hack
→ Designs UI, architects flows, debugs infra, builds n8n + RAG pipelines
It behaves like a **project-aware senior engineer inside my CLI**
No credit burn.
No shallow context.
No fake demo workflows.
But here’s the reality check:
This is NOT plug-and-play.
→ You need proper proxy handling for tools + MCP (most setups fail here)
→ Model routing needs to be clean, or latency + responses degrade fast
→ Skills architecture matters more than the model itself
Most “free Claude Code” posts ignore all of this.
That’s why they look good in screenshots… and break in real projects.
Key takeaway:
The difference isn’t “which model you use.”
It’s whether your system can **sustain intelligence across an actual codebase.**
If it can’t… you’re just chatting, not building.
If you want, I’ll share the full setup:
– NVIDIA NIM + DeepSeek routing config
– MCP wiring (filesystem, GitHub, n8n, Tavily)
– My `.claude/skills` structure that makes it behave like *my team*
Comment **“guide”** and I’ll drop it.
