Every morning, a teacher in Olpad travels 12 km to get to school.
Along the way, she collects 12 of her students.
It’s a small school. Just two teachers for 30 children, from Kindergarten to 5th grade.
With so little, you might expect the aim to be modest…. It isn’t.
These children are being prepared for mainstream schools. Not only are they learning English and other languages, but they’re being trained for public speaking as well.
Most of them come from underprivileged homes, and the school runs on small donations from neighbouring villages.
Many of them here didn’t even have the basics: proper uniforms, shoes, and stationery. But their dedication to learning never faltered in spite of these challenges. Recently, the TECH EHS team had the privilege of visiting Selut Village Primary School to hand those over.
For many of these children, wearing shoes had been a dream. A few couldn’t wait. They put on their new uniforms and shoes right there and posed for photos with us.
Each of us who visited spoke with the children and encouraged them to keep learning. Many of us got emotional, and why shouldn’t we? Seeing these children going through so many challenges makes most of ours look small in comparison.
But the longer we stayed, the clearer it became that this story isn’t about us. It’s about children who show up eager to learn, and two teachers who make sure they can.
In our line of work, we spend our days thinking about protecting people. Most of the time, those people are names on a register or numbers in a report. This visit reminded us that behind every number is someone real.
