Why Your YouTube Shorts Aren't Growing — And What Actually Drives the Algorithm
After working with hundreds of creators, I keep seeing the same misconception:
"The algorithm is against me."
It's not. Here's what's really happening.
YouTube's Shorts algorithm is essentially a viewer behavior tracker. Every time someone encounters your Short, the platform is measuring four things:
Did they stop scrolling?
Did they watch to the end?
Did they rewatch it?
Did they engage with it?
When viewers swipe away, YouTube registers one signal: this content didn't earn attention. When they stay, watch, and engage, YouTube does the one thing every creator wants — it distributes the content further.
This is why two creators can post near-identical content in the same niche and get completely different results. One gets 500 views. The other gets 500,000.
The variable isn't the algorithm. It's audience response.
The algorithm doesn't pick winners arbitrarily. It amplifies what the audience has already voted on — with their attention.
So before optimizing your posting schedule, your hashtags, or your upload frequency, ask yourself the more important question:
Is my content actually earning the next second of someone's attention?
