Revisiting an Old Project — ESP32-S3 Devkit (Pin-Compatible with ESP32 Devkit V1)

About two and a half years ago, we designed this development board for a client who was using the classic ESP32 Devkit V1 but wanted a newer MCU — partly out of concern over possible NRND (Not Recommended for New Designs) notices on older WROOM modules.

Our goal: make it as pin-compatible as possible with the affordable 30-pin ESP32 Devkit V1 and its many clones, while quietly improving the internals.

This design features:
ESP32-S3 with dual LX7 cores
USB Type-C directly connected for both serial and JTAG
256Mbit (32MB) QSPI flash
Clamshell SD card connector mounted on the underside

It’s been interesting to watch how these designs evolve — even today, the original 30-pin boards are still widely available (and now come with Type-C ports too).

We didn’t set out to make something revolutionary — just practical, robust, and forward-looking.

Sometimes the best designs are the ones that quietly extend the usefulness of what people already know.
