May 19 is observed as National Endangered Species Day, for us to understand the enormity of human impact on the environment. It’s time we consider the dwindling populations of certain species year on year and create a habitable world for the endangered species, one action at a time. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, at least 40% of animals, insects, and plants are at risk of extinction across the world.
This day was created to keep us aware of how fragile the existence of some animals, plants, and insects is – and, most importantly, reminds us to learn why it’s crucial to protect endangered species.
Perhaps one of the earliest and most learned about extinctions in history is that of the dinosaurs. However, an endangered species is one which is still around, but may not be much longer if the right steps aren’t taken.
Continue to be curious about the endangered species and look for volunteering opportunities at local nature centers. Be mindful of your souvenir purchases when traveling as they could come from illegal wildlife trade, recycle and buy sustainable products – never buy furniture made from rainforest wood, minimize use of palm oil as the forest cover is rapidly decreasing across the world to plant palm plantations.
