Similarly, incorporating surprise into learning can be an effective way to engage and motivate learners if surprise elements are integrated systematically within the boundaries of the instructional strategy. For example, a quiz with unexpected or unconventional questions can be an excellent way to surprise learners and keep them engaged. An eLearning course on customer service might include a case study about a customer with an unusual request and how the company was able to meet that request creatively and effectively. These types of examples can provide a refreshing break from more traditional content and help learners to see the relevance of the material in the real world.

Incorporating unexpected twists in the material can also be effective. For example, using mythological stories as metaphors or analogies, or using humor appropriately and tastefully, can help to lighten the mood and make the learning experience more enjoyable. Difference Between Instructional Strategy and Instructional Design

Instructional Designers must be aware of the distinction between Instructional Strategy and Instructional Design. While the term Instructional Design can be broadly applied to encompass Instructional Strategy, it is beneficial to differentiate between these concepts to apply appropriate learning methodologies effectively and design page-level interactions in a given context.

Instructional Strategies refer to the specific techniques and approaches teachers employ to facilitate learning, while Instructional Design is the overall process of creating educational materials and experiences systematically and efficiently.

For example, an Instructional Strategy that utilizes the Constructive Theory of Learning as a guide would involve teaching techniques and activities that align with the principles of constructive theory, such as actively engaging learners in building new knowledge and encouraging them to connect new information with their prior knowledge. To implement this Instructional Strategy, the Instructional Designer will create page-level interactions, such as branched conversations, decision-making scenarios, and games. Without the guidance of an Instructional Strategy, the creation of page-level interactions will lack purpose.

In summary, the Instructional Strategy is the overall approach to teaching, while the Instructional Design involves the development of specific materials and activities to execute the Instructional Strategy.
