How does BIM coordination actually work?

BIM coordination is the process of bringing different discipline models together, checking whether they work together, identifying conflicts, and helping the project team resolve them before construction problems occur.

For example, an architectural model may show a ceiling, a structural model may contain a beam, and an MEP model may contain a duct. If these elements occupy the same space, the issue needs to be identified and coordinated.

That is why BIM coordination is more than knowing Revit.

A BIM Coordinator needs to understand:
• How models from different disciplines connect
• How to federate and review models
• How to identify and report clashes
• How to communicate issues clearly
• How to track and support resolution

The important career lesson is simple: software knowledge helps you create and review models, but coordination requires workflow understanding, communication and problem-solving.

BIM Coordination is more important than just 3D modeling because a BIM model becomes valuable when different disciplines can work together without conflicts.

A 3D model shows what is being built digitally. BIM coordination goes further: it checks how Architecture, Structure and MEP interact, identifies conflicts, communicates issues and supports better project decisions.

For example, an architectural model may look complete, but a structural beam could pass through an MEP duct. The modeler has created the geometry, but the coordinator must help identify and resolve the coordination issue before it becomes a site problem.

This is why learning Revit alone does not automatically make someone a BIM Coordinator.

A BIM Coordinator needs to understand:
• Multi-discipline models
• Clash detection
• Model federation
• Issue tracking
• Coordination communication
• Model validation
• Project workflow

Practical takeaway: when learning BIM, don't ask only, “Can I create a 3D model?” Ask, “Can I understand how my model affects the rest of the project?”

That shift—from modeling to coordination—is an important step in BIM career development.

What is Navisworks, and why is it important in BIM?

Navisworks is a coordination and project review tool used to bring models from different disciplines together. In a BIM workflow, that can mean combining Architectural, Structural and MEP models so teams can review the project as one coordinated environment.

The important point is this: Navisworks is not simply another 3D modeling software.

Its real value comes from coordination.

For example, a structural beam may pass through an MEP service route. Instead of discovering the problem during construction, BIM teams can review the combined models, identify clashes and communicate issues earlier. Navisworks can also support model review, clash detection, coordination and construction planning workflows.

This leads to an important career lesson for students: learning Revit can help you create models, but understanding how models are coordinated is a different skill.

If your goal is to move toward BIM Coordinator or BIM Engineer responsibilities, learn the workflow—not just the software buttons.

Most students know how to become a BIM Modeler. Far fewer understand what it takes to become a BIM Coordinator.

That difference matters.

A BIM Coordinator is not simply someone who knows Revit. The role involves coordinating architectural, structural and MEP models, identifying clashes, understanding project requirements, communicating with different teams and helping ensure that the digital model works as one coordinated project.

If you are a Civil or Architecture student, this is an important career path to understand before choosing your next skill.

That is why we are introducing a FREE BIM Career Challenge designed to help you understand the BIM Coordinator career path through practical, industry-focused learning.

You will explore what a BIM Coordinator actually does, what skills are expected, how coordination happens and what you need to learn to move toward the role.

No complicated theory. No unrealistic promises. Just a clearer understanding of the career.

For students looking for BIM Course Pune or practical CAD and BIM training in Pune, understanding the role before starting is a smart first step.

Why do BIM Coordinators need clash detection skills?

Because BIM coordination is not simply about looking at a 3D model. A BIM Coordinator must identify problems before they become expensive problems on site.

Imagine an HVAC duct passing through a structural beam, a pipe colliding with another service, or an access route being blocked by an architectural element. These issues may look small inside a model, but they can create delays, rework, material wastage and coordination problems during construction.

That is why clash detection is an important BIM skill.

A good BIM Coordinator should be able to:

• Understand architectural, structural and MEP models
• Identify hard and soft clashes
• Use coordination software effectively
• Understand why a clash has occurred
• Communicate the issue clearly with different teams
• Support the team in finding practical solutions

Learning Navisworks and understanding the coordination process can help civil and architecture professionals move beyond basic modelling and develop real BIM coordination skills.

If you are building a career in BIM, focus on solving project problems, not just learning software. 🏗️

A BIM Coordinator is not just someone who checks 3D models.

Every day, a BIM Coordinator helps different teams work together without costly coordination problems.

A typical day may include reviewing Architectural, Structural and MEP models, checking clashes, coordinating with engineers and architects, reviewing model quality, tracking issues and making sure project information follows the required BIM standards.

But there is another important part of the role: communication.

A good BIM Coordinator needs to understand what each discipline is doing, identify problems early and communicate clearly with the right team.

That means your career growth in BIM depends on more than learning Revit or Navisworks.

You need to develop four areas:

BIM software skills
Coordination and problem-solving
Understanding of construction workflows
Communication and teamwork

For Civil and Architecture students, this is why project-based learning matters. Working on a multidisciplinary project gives you an opportunity to understand what actually happens beyond modelling.

If you are planning a BIM career, start preparing for the responsibilities of the role—not just the software.
